Description

India’s first polyamoric book, 3 On A Bed: Contemporary Indian Novellas is about a menage-a-trois or a threesome of two men and a woman.

Summary Of The Book

3 On A Bed: Contemporary Indian Novellas is about three friends, Kapil, Debdutta and Padmini were close friends who graduated from an Arts College. They shared everything among themselves including food and themselves. Padmini loves both the men but instead of making a choice between the two, she decides to live with both. Kapil and Debdutta do not mind either. Instead of fighting over their love or getting jealous, they decide to share their woman with each other. The story is narrated as a flashback by Debdutta, while facing an interview for the job of a creative artist in an advertisement agency

This issue makes the reader think about these kind of relationships in India. The book challenges the view that when two people of the two different sexes stay together, the binding force is a complex bonding based on sexuality and love which not only keeps them bound to each other but also makes them possessive about each other. When a third person intrudes in such a chemistry, feelings of jealousy and anger. The book also delves deep into the terms upon which such a relationship can exist in the Indian context.

The book ends on a feel-good note when the characters unite and convey the message that such a relationship is possible if dealt with maturity and trust.

The book has been written after a 32-minute short film in the same name and on the same lines was made by its authors, Rajdeep Paul and Sarmistha Maiti. The film was produced by Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute(SRFTI) and inspired by Girish Karnad’s Kannada play ‘Hayavadana’.

About The Authors

An IT professional turned filmmaker, Rajeev Paul passed out from the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute(SRFTI) in March, 2012.

Rajiv believes that with so much of intermingling between the sexes in the current scenario, polyamory is no longer uncommon. In fact, of late, the youth has come to accept it openly. He relates to the subject deeply and carries the notion that in a polyamorous relationship, where one has more than one sexual relationship with the consent of all involved, sexual needs are a secondary factor.

His co-director, Sarmistha Maiti also passed out from the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute.

She, with her co author has written the book with such artistic precision that it becomes adorable to its readers, without becoming overtly boring or erotic.

Review for 3 on a bed

I will review this book based on my own perspective of reading.

The novel is basically a collection of 3 stories which gives equal attention on both the visible and hidden scenarios of Indian society (both politically and socially )as well as the conflicts inside of a person's mind, then moving on to a unconventional love story or to say a relationship (as i will like to say)and finally transitioning to a story of a woman's fear of a festival of colors (Holi) .

The first story, "India 24...

the book goes beyond the conventional values of the society.

3 on a bed an outcome of two first time authors is book that is unique in its own way. It is one of those intense and thought provoking book that grips the mind of the reader. The book having 3 novellas deals with the theme of love compassion, gender equality, power, fear, possession and much more within the framework of Indian society.

The book and especially the title story provides a different and diverse outlook towards the so called “romantic” relationship between two men and a w...
