7 Secrets of Shiva (Paperback) Price: Rs.258

In 7 Secrets Of Shiva, Devdutt Pattanaik attempts to dissociate the symbolic form of Lord Shiva from his physical form, by providing a detailed analysis of the subjective and metaphysical aspects rather than the objective aspects.

Summary Of The Book

In 7 Secrets Of Shiva, Pattanaik begins his analysis of Hindu mythology by looking at the conflict between Western methodology and Hindu devotees. He states that when Western scholars and academicians examine Hindu mythological symbols such as the Shiva Linga, they are more concerned about the objective representation. Objectively it is a phallus, but subjectively it represents a mind that is unstirred and happy. Hindu devotees are more concerned with the latter explanation and therefore ignore the former during their worship.

In a similar style of analysis, Pattanaik goes on to decipher the seven forms of Lord Shiva. In the first chapter titled Lingeshwara, the author goes beyond the meaning of a phallic symbol. Instead, the Lingeshwara represents mental stimulation, happiness, and a focused mind. In the second chapter titled Bhairava, Lord Shiva’s form rids fear and predation. With the banishment of fear, the mind is able to continue on the path to inner happiness. In the third and fourth chapters titled Shankara and Bholenath, Shiva is portrayed as a householder and as the counterpart of the goddess Shakti.

Their union symbolises the propagation of the species. It also explains how the goddess attempts to get Shiva to participate in the material world. The fifth and sixth chapters are concerned with Shiva’s sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. It explains how Ganesha removes scarcity, and promotes a good life, prosperity, and knowledge. Kartikeya wards off evil doers and predation. The final chapter is titled Nataraja, and it represents the universe’s movement. When Lord Shiva performed the Tandava, he was destroying the Universe. Apart from deciphering the symbolism behind Hindu mythology, Pattanaik has included illustrations, photographs, poster art, and blurbs to give readers a visual dimension to the explanation.

Most Informative book on Lord Shiva

Unlike Books of Shiva which you are most likely to find in regional Indian Languages, this one is in English.I found the book to b extremely informative on some fronts though some of these facts are well known.
Great pictures and art works that have been borrowed for the book.
I liked the fact that Someone took the Initiative to write about Hinduism at large and that is Devdutt Patnaik.
We need people who will write about Hinduism and hindu gods and goddesses .This is largely in the Indian context.

The last time I read a PDF of Wendy Doniger's The hindus - I was a bit offended due to its liberal american attitude towards Hindu Culture.
But Mr.Devdutt Patnaik Books are good. For the Hindu who hardly visits the temple or is ignorant about his own religion this is a good book.Wendy Doniger's books are for more tolerant people.I am opposed to the ban on the book but you should read Mr.Patnaik's books
They are the best books coming out in the modern day india that speaks volumes about Hinduism
Mr.Devdutt Patnaik also regularly writes about Management from the perspective of hinduism in the newspapers.
Go ahead and read it.You dont have to be Shiv Bhakt.

Inspiring a serial!

Read Dr. Pattanaik's few books earlier and this one too is one of his best writings. The new channel Life Ok is airing a serial on Lord Shiva " MAHADEV" and the producers give due credits to Dr Pattanaik's writings for being the inspiration of the serial. I am neither a Shiva sadhika nor an expert in mythology but reading this great book was a soothing experience. Shiva's various aspects as Kaal Bhairav, Sundareshwar, Kashi Vishwanath, Gore Bhairav have been wonderfully ellaborated in different chapters leaving the readers spell bound and surrendered before Mahadev. Shiva's Nivratti marg as compared to Narayan's Pravritti Marg has been justified aptly leaving it to the readers to decide which is the greatest of both.

An amazing book by Devdutt. After watching videos of devdutt on the net,was curious on his literature. This was my first book and he has impressed me a lot.Am a fan of devdutt.

The simplicity, language,To The Point description, the depth,Meanings inferred and the authenticity of the content is just marvellous. This book takes you pretty deep into spirituality and lot more things that you didnt know but were following, become clear highlighting it's purpose.

Having read 6 books of his(at the moment), i must say he's the one who has made mythology/Spirituality simple to understand.

off beat book for the symbolic shiva

I love this book. For it doesn't talk about Shiva the god. instead it focuses on Shiva the philosophy. the symbol
I particularly loved the section where Devdutt Pattanaik explains the difference between Shiv and Shankar, Sati and Parvati.
I would recommend not reading it as a novel. instead read and think over, the ideas. try and apply it in real life to real situations and people, that's when you will love this book
After reading this book infact I understood that I don't need to do stupid things like fasting for 16 mondays to please Shiva... infact Shiva is within each one of us... and he...

Great insight into Indian Myhtology and Symbolism

Sri Devdutt Pattanaik explains the stories and their meanings and interpretations of almost everything that is associated with Shiva. It is a great eye-opener. Most Indians would have seen Shiva linga. What exactly does it mean? Who is Parvati? Who is Shankara? Why do people worship Shiva the destroyer and Vishnu the preserver and not Brahma the creator? Why are some of the sadhus in the Himalayan region the way they are? Why is rudrakshi mala associated with Shiva. What does Shiva Purana contain? and so on and so on are many questions that Sri Devdutt Pattanaik explains in his unique and l... ()

Writer has tried to take as good as possible.

Writer has tried to take as good as possible from stories and symbols, which looks unrealistic. I think history and reality might be different than so called good good things (View complete review)

A good read

I gifted this to my Mom and she said this was one book where she found something new in every page.
Also the delivery came pretty quick and I ordered this with the combo of Mahabharat which was equally great.
