Eerie

It was really strange for me, the experience of reading this book. I had always loved history in school and was good at it too. I'd read the history of the Indian subcontinent zealously and thought I knew a fair bit on the matter. But this book seemed to present that story in such a way that it all seemed new. History is mostly read, taught and understood through the evaluation of a subjective narrative of historical events. Maps on the other hand provide an objetive view of these events and situations. They're free from prejudice and hence present their world in an unbiased way that is difficult, if not impossible, to do in prose. What the book provides, in itself, is nothing new or unique or rare. But the manner and perspective of its provision makes it stand apart. The everyman, like me, would never be able to access such an assorted variety of maps and the intrinsic knowledge contained within them on his own. So its a real gift to have someone do it for you. Sure the price is steep . But I found it worth the money...great book..

Impressive

The first maps of the Indian subcontinent were made by travelers who had come from Europe and other parts of Asia. These however were little more than a rough estimate of the landscape which was based on the observation of 1 single person. Obviously they lacked accuracy. The precise mapping the Orient first began when the European colonial powers ventured into the East for the purposes of trade and conquest. As their dominion spread the maps became more and more precise. A map depicts the physical and political conditions of a particular space and is thus an indispensible tool. This book co... ()

This book contains nearly all maps made of the Indian subcontinent starting from the very first ones which were made 500 years ago. It is a great way of exploring and understanding the history of the land we inhabit.

Informative

I was intrigued by the title of the book when i came across the the book in a bookstore. When observed through the historical and geographical lens of the nation, the book provides an account of all the important events during the establishment of the nation. The writer has wrestled to come to terms with the complexity that was involved in the formation of the nation, and how the different political states came into existence. A unique book that enables an insight into the nation's history. An interesting read to all enthusiasts in history.

Beautiful

I've always found reading history very tiresome. Even in school I had the same opinion. So when I picked up this book at the local library, I did it more out of lack of alternatives rather than any particular interest. That changed very soon however, as I found myself stooping over its pages, awed by their meticulous detailing. This is a great way of understanding history. Maps are so easy to read and understand. Definitely better than some boring prose accounting historical events in a sombre manner. I highly recommend this book !
