A Discovery Of Witches begins when historian Diana Bishop opens an ancient, long-lost manuscript, and thus exposes herself to a world that she has tried to forget. She is now vulnerable to a world of witches, demons and vampires.

    Summary Of The Book

A Discovery Of Witches is the first book in the All Souls trilogy. The main character, Diana Bishop, is a descendant of a long and distinguished line of witches. But that is a world that she is keen to forget. The violent death of her parents gave her the conviction that the power of human fear is more potent than any power a witch might have.

She is now a historian, teaching alchemical history at Oxford University. The magical world of witches is a part of her life that has been shut out for a long time. But it is not a world that is easily eluded. She learns that when she makes an accidental discovery.

In the Bodleian Library at Oxford, she finds an ancient manuscript on alchemy. She takes a few notes, then consigns the book back to the shelves. However, that is not the end of the matter. For, the book she found is a coveted treasure in the magical realm.

Now, creatures from that other world, vampires and witches, descend on the library, trying to find out how Diana managed to find that ancient manuscript. Among them is Matthew Clairmont, a Geneticist who is also a vampire. Diana finds herself irresistibly attracted towards Mathew. Their relationship, however, threatens an ancient and uneasy peace that exists between the world of the humans and the other world.

A Discovery Of Witches received mainly positive reviews and has drawn comparison with books like the Twilight series and the Harry Potter books. It has been translated into 36 other languages, and Warner Brothers has acquired the film rights to the novel.

    Its OK!

the first thing i noticed while writing the review was the price! how it has dropped in a year.. i ordered the same a year ago at double the price.. :D anyhow coming to my feelings about the book though its a year late... if u a true blood harry potter fan.. u will survive all the pages though may not find them that interesting or thrilling ...as the heroine is not just the chosen one but the real avataar that is born!! gets a bit too much.. doesn't it at times.. I guess the omnipotence of th...

    A Discovery of Witches

A captivating story that combines myth, romance, action and history. The author has made the characters complex and believable. The only (few) annoying parts were the moony-eyed descriptions of romantic feelings. A problem that is solved by reading the sequel, Shadow of Night, which is a vastly better book and a fantastic experiment in historical fiction. Read this one and then move on the sequel, you'll love it.

A really good book, if you're patient enough for the next book

I've seen the negative comments this book has got, and honestly, when i first began reading this book, i couldn't get past the first chapter. 3 months later, i picked it up again cause i didn't have anything else to read. As the story unravels, I think it's worth the patience because the storyline is amazing. I loved it and now i'm beginning to wonder why i hadn't liked it the first time. This book really blew me away.
This isnt a typical witch book like Harry potter, so dont compare, and i do...

    Awesome Book

This book is a little slow in pace but believe me the next book in sequence will blow you away. The amount of work reqired in writing such a book is really commendable. This book can truly be said as the next Harry Potter or Twilight. Hats-off to Debroah Harkness for her intricate research of medievel england. eagerly awaiting for Book of life.
