A free man (Hardcover) Price: Rs.399

Mohammed Ashraf has studied biology in college, and after college has learnt how to repair television sets, cut suit lengths, and slice chicken. He has lived in Mumbai, Calcutta, Hyderabad, Surat, and Patna, but this evening he is stoned on a street in Sadar Bazaar, in North Delhi. The morning shall bring hangovers, whiskey breakfasts, and possibly answers to the lingering questions that haunt Ashraf. How did he get here? Why is he the way he is? And is there a way back home?

In this compelling account of the life of an itinerant labourer, Aman Sethi brings Ashraf vividly alive and illuminates the lives of countless others like him. Wry, humourous, and insightful, A Free Man is an unforgettable portrait of an invisible man in his invisible city.

About the Author
Aman Sethi was born in Bombay in 1983. He studied chemistry in Delhi, and journalism in Chennai and New York. He is currently the Chhattisgarh correspondent for The Hindu. This is his first book.

Book which fills your urge to read ...

a. Initially attempted to read this during to-fro to office , but sooner realized this
would kill the feel of book .
-> So read it when you can spend at-least 30-40 min at one go .
10-15 min reading will kill it

b. Also this is not a book where author gives u some life changing lesson by the example
-> It meant for pure pleasure of reading and experience the feel which author tries
to share with readers.

Guys , by the end of journey with main character , you will find sharing the feeling and thinking of author .......mind it this is where author...

Story of the Rolling stone who never gathered moss

This book is about a homeless guy who has lived in 6 cities in different parts of the country. He cannot call any city his home though in most of the cities, he has stayed for more than two years. Finally he begins to search his roots but lands up in the city he liked the most, Kolkata. Most of the 'migrant generation' of today's India can relate themselves to this Bihari Muslim man named Ashraf. Kudos to Aman and I urge you to write on the 'migrant generation' who change cities every two or three years for studying, job etc.

Brilliant book!

One of the best books ive read in a long time. thoroughly engaging. Recommended for anyone who is tired of the uber glossy, candyfloss depiction of urban India. The book is liberally laced with witty one liners and is a brilliant account of the life on the streets. The characters stay with you long after u've put the book down. A free man sets some serious benchmark for Non fiction Indian writers.

Wonderful Read

Sethi's book is a complex narrative in the lives of people who cannot call any single place their home. They do not associate with their past or are looking at a planned future. The books is a study in rootlesness. What is it to live without somebody to worry about you if you went missing or died in an accident.
The book is well written and moves quickly. Unputdownable!

A really great book!

Bought this book on Flipkart after reading the excerpt that was published in the Caravan Magazine. Flipkart, as usual, gives a great deal and backs it up with great service.

One of the better things I have read in some time.
