Aatujeevitham (Paperback) Price: Rs.145

Aatujeevitham (Malayalam) by Benyamin trails the rigorous journey of a simple Keralite through the deep deserts of the Gulf and details how his dreams are crushed by the harsh forces of reality as he pulls through a tough life for three long years with almost no one to communicate with.

Summary Of The Book

With dreams colliding against the harsh walls of reality, Aatujeevitham (Malayalam) by Benjamin is a deep and emotional tale of a Keralite’s journey amidst the sand dunes of Saudi Arabia. The author, Benyamin, uses simplistic overtones blended with deep rooted emotions and a plethora of experiences to produce a piece that the reader is bound to connect with.

The book trails the journey of Najeeb, who like many others of his kind is offered a visa to travel to Saudi Arabia to pursue his dreams, leaving behind his beloved mother and pregnant wife. Accompanied by a companion named Hakeem, Najeeb waits to see his life transform in Saudi Arabia. Things take a different turn when both the men are left by a truck in different corners of the desert.

Najeeb finds himself amidst the deserts of the Gulf with not a single human being around and almost no food and water. Aatujeevitham (Malayalam), thereafter, traces his life occurrences and his experiences with the only living beings around him, camels and goats. The book details how Najeeb tries to pull through each day with no knowledge of how time passes. His only ray of hope is the truck that arrives with food, water and fodder.

Najeeb becomes resigned with his sorry situation, only to have rare hope to escape, which is crushed almost the minute it surfaces. What is Najeeb’s fate? Will he ever get rescued from the hell that he lives in? This book answers these questions and more.

Aatujeevitham (Malayalam) has been written in simple language, making it easy for the reader to connect with the protagonist and his life.
The book won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. The book is also a prescribed textbook in universities such as Kerala University, Pondicherry University, Calicut University, and Bharathiar University. The English translation was also listed for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2012.

Great work

This is one of the best work of fiction I have ever read in Malayalam. A land mark book. We can feel the pain and emotions that the author would have undergone while writing this book. The book is as raw as life could be and as beautiful as life should be. Being an author myself, I could associate with the afterword in which the author describes the process of writing. Writing itself is a tough task, writing so beautifully, so lyrically is nearly impossible. Benyamin has achieved the near impossible- writing a great piece of fiction, while keeping the reader engrossed like he is reading a p... ()

The book is as raw as life could be and as beautiful as life should be. Being an author myself, I could associate with the afterword in which the author describes the process of writing. Writing itself is a tough task, writing so beautifully, so lyrically is nearly impossible. Benyamin has achieved the near impossible- writing a great piece of fiction, while keeping the reader engrossed like he is reading a pot boiler. That, is the mark of a true classic. There are popular books that are page turners, but very poor in literary value and then at the other end of the spectrum there are good literary works that intimidates an average reader or even perhaps bore him to death. Good literature is that which makes the reader engrossed and enthralled at the same time. Aatujeevitham is one such work. Future generation will refer to this work as an example of how a beautiful piece of literature should be written. Great indeed.

Think twice before accepting a Gulf Gift!

As a person in my sixties and have spent the middle piece of my life in the Desert, surely the best of it except for few initial teething years, I'm convinced the narratives are factual, accurate and justly honest. The author has dispensed optimum effort to research on Najib’s zig-zag turns in his expatriate life as well as the curves, wrinkles, climatic and geographical aspects etc., of the Desert. At the conclusion the reader is in pain to point a finger towards the actual culprit. Was it the ‘Arbab” who faked as sponsor to fetch an unclaimed slave from the Airport Lou... ()

Was it the ‘Arbab” who faked as sponsor to fetch an unclaimed slave from the Airport Lounge. Or the genre consisting of various elements whom we call the society (including immediate family, friendship circle, men of letters (teachers, Moulavies, Pastors and so on) the local, state & central administration machinery, travel and airport support staff, host of social welfare agencies, religious men and reformers, and many others who did not see purpose in ascertaining the type of visa, job for which it is issued, details of the employer, place of work, and all other relevant labor issues associated with hiring manpower hands for work in a strange and perfectly different country. What pains me further is the fact that the situation (in our society) has not much changed. Forget about US or UK citizens in the Gulf, but even the Philippines, a country comparable to India have systematic machinery to ascertain Emigrants whereabouts and render the support which may be in need of. In the event of unfortunate happenings, the Philippines Overseas Employment Agency will intervene to save their citizen back home and substitute with similar opportunities. The book is a must read by any Indian, especially the Malayalee, who knows somebody who have anybody in the Arabian Gulf .

Excellent Narration

My First try with flipkart - Fast response to the order.

The Best thing of this book is about the way author narrates the desert and the Feelings of Najeeb(main character). Benyamin does it such a way that , even the readers will feel happy when u see a bucket full of water for taking a bath. The feelings are strongly passed ,straight into your heart.
The situation ans the charas remain in your mind long after you finishes the Book.

A must read ......
