ADI PARVA (Hardcover) Price: Rs.500

Flipkart Official Reveiw

There is the concept of the storyteller in the Indian tradition, also known as the sutradhar. The one who holds the thread, thats what it means. Of storytelling, of plots, of history and of the present and the future. One must not underestimate the ability of a storyteller. There is more to them than what meets the eye. This is what Amruta Patil tries and brings about amongst many things in her latest offering, Adi Parva.

Adi Parva is Book 1 of the Mahabharata. It is how the epic came to be, which is narrated by Sauti (traditionally) to the rishis after the Sarpasatra (killing of the snakes) of Janamejaya (a direct descendant of the Pandavs). The first volume starts with how the Mahabharata came to be and ends with the birth of the Kauravas and the Pandavas. The Mahabharata as a tale is known to all. Many forms have been given to it in stories and different perspectives as well. This one however is told in the form of a graphic novel and Amruta Patil uses her craft stupendously. To take a mythological tale and to present it differently is challenging enough, however to keep balancing it between the present and the past is more difficult, which Amruta has successfully managed.

The illustrations are breath-taking no doubt, however what is also very charming about the book is the way the tale has been narrated. There are intervals almost parallel narratives from the sutradhar to the story itself. The title in itself is unique: Adi Parva: Churning of the Ocean via Amruta Patil. It is as though the author in herself is the sutradhar (which is of course another way of looking at it). The drawings will definitely make you want to reread the book.

DescriptionFrom the bestselling author of Kari comes a brilliant new interpretation of mythology. Combining stories from the Adi Parva which precede the main narrative of the PandavKaurav war for succession.

About the Author:Amruta Patil is a writer and painter. Her debut graphic novel Kari published by HarperCollins India was widely appreciated and established her as one of the best graphic novelists in India.

'Adi Parva' is gold!

A divine story so brilliantly told, it isn't surprising that the beautiful hardbound cover charmingly says 'via' Amruta Patil.

If you like me loved her previous masterpiece 'Kari', then you will love this too -- it's a whole new dimension.
Just as 'Kari' had a stunning homage to Frida Kahlo's The Two Fridas, Adi parva has a wonderfully drawn page inspired by Matisse's The Dance (If I am not mistaken. perhaps there are more hidden gems and references, who knows?). The artwork on the whole is stunningly simple, vibrant, and original.
The book is an effortless flow of words and images to make you dumbstruck and awed. There is magical play of words and lots of humor to make you chuckle, and with such sensitivity and curiosity this story is told. Amruta Patil is too articulate. her poetic choice of words, intelligent witty dialogue, and her style of storytelling makes this even more special.
She has complete mastery over the written word -- there is this mystical sort of quality to her writing. That matched with the cosmic context of this epic makes her the perfect 'sutradhaar' for our times. can't wait for the next book in the trilogy!
Well, this needs to be read twice and thrice and n-times to fully digest the scope of it. The story will linger on, and make you giddy. :)

An artist's delight

This book is a marvel of visual delight. Every page has been approached as a work of art and not just another link in a story. That makes the turning of each page a great excitement. The artist/ author's visual style is contemporary yet very Indian, making it a great study of technique and color play for every amateur painter.
The writing style is friendly and somewhat sardonic, giving you the chance for a quite chuckle every now and then. Its narrated in an informal conversational tone, that makes the otherwise heavy topics relatively more approachable, and , perhaps even, a little more understandable. For all those who are making a first foray into modern Indian tales, this is definitely one of the better beginnings. For those who are no stranger to the genre, its not a book that will give out any new surprises, writing-wise, but the book itself is enjoyable and quite obviously, a labor of great love for the author, and its worth keeping this one around for as a conversation starter definitely ! The art is outstanding and definitely adds to the reading pleasure. A must buy for book lovers :)

Riveting!

The quality of the printing itself is remarkable and once you're able to get over this, the beauty of the artwork with its rich colours and gentle touch will overwhelm! Some of the two-page spreads are absolutely awe-inspiring.

This is not one tale but several, interlinked stories brought together masterfully by the storyteller through common themes and lessons. Even if you have already read the Mahabharata's Adi Parva, nothing can prepare you for the freshness of this interpretation. A recurring thought while reading this was: I know these stories, but not like this.

Absolutely marvellous stuff. Something I find myself picking up and flipping through every now and then. Can't wait for the sequels. :)

Expensive but really nice

I got the book when it was on sale so i got it for 500 instead of it's whooping mrp 800. It's a beautiful book with interesting illustrations and a new take on graphic novel. It's for adults and not entriely a kid's fairy tale book, unless you want to work with them on it. Buy it, wait for it to get discounted though. the copy i got had dog eared pages but flipkart replaced it very soon. the replaced copy is in excellent condition. the delivery was prompt i'd say.

Adi Parva, churning of the ocean

Not exactly a thriller, 2 or 3 more volumes are still to be done and it begins when the "saga" of the Mahabharata was only in gestation... but wonderful, colorful paintings, Amruta Patil, the author, lives by the sea and you can tell it. Nothing to do with ordinary picture books on the epic for kids. To be enjoyed again and again.
