Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is the biggest English language dictionary. It is aimed at non-native speakers, and is published by the Oxford University Press. It has been used by approximately 35 million readers all over the world.
The first edition of this dictionary was published in 1948. The current edition is the eighth edition. Apart from being available in printed form, the latest edition is also available in the form of a CD-ROM.
The latest edition covers a lot more ground than its predecessors. It has a total of 184,500 words, meanings, and phrases. It has also introduced a thousand new words. Around 700 global words that are now considered a part of English are also included. An added advantage is that about 3000 special words or key words are highlighted and these include some of the most useful words, and their meanings.
There is a new interactive section that includes several vocabulary banks corresponding to a variety of topics. Numerous dictation and language exercises are also provided.
The Oxford Writing Tutor and the Oxford iWriter (provided on the CD-ROM) are a couple of highlights of the latest edition. They are particularly helpful in preparing presentations and essays as well as in honing writing skills.
Some of the other improved elements of the new edition include better look-up methods for entries, in-depth etymological information, and a visual vocabulary builder in colour.

A ClassicI've used the OALD ever since I can remember using dictionaries. It is perhaps the single most resourceful book you will ever own. I lost my copy while moving houses a few months back, hence the new copy.

Go ahead buy it ...you wont regretAs usual , on-time delivery by flip kart. Also loved the complimentary book mark . Oxford advanced dictionary managed to impress me with its buoyancy and content . Ideal for people who are willing to learn the usage of the word as it has many sentences as examples given along . It provides added advantage of learning synonyms of the word too. So advice to everyone , go ahead buy this and improve your lexicon .

its good, but....For example, a simple word like 'tumid' is not included in this dictionary, which is included in even the oxford concise dictionary. There are many unecessary entries, and many words missing. I would suggest that people go for the concise instead, because this is more for students in school and college. Its constructed that way, and believe me I like this dictionary, but I just wish more sentences with examples were provided. I would recommend the cambridge advanced learners instead. Its much better than the oxford. Just my 2 cents.

Magnificent. All time great ! A life long companion ! I've been using this since 1979. In every four or five years later - I only buy the revised and updated version. It consists almost all the requirements - pronunciations, examples of uses in sentences and many more that a dictionary user may need.
