The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn is the sequel to The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer. It explores the racism prevalent in the past in the Southern United States. It is set during the Antebellum era that lasted from 1781 to 1860.

The novel is set in St Petersburg, a town on the banks of the Mississippi river. The narrator is the protagonist Huckleberry Finn, a 13-year-old boy.
Huck lives with the kind Widow Douglas and her sister Miss Watson, both of whom are attempting to civilize him. He is not too happy with the situation, and is especially resentful of the strict Miss Watson. Things go from bad to worse for Huck when his alcoholic father returns to claim custody of him. His father’s abusive ways eventually force him to escape. He does so quite dramatically by faking his own murder.

Huck then sets off along the Mississippi river. He befriends and becomes very close to a slave named Jim. Huck even attempts to free Jim from enslavement with the help of his friend Tom. His journey takes him on a series of adventures until his identity is finally revealed.

Identity and race are the primary themes highlighted in the book. Huck’s conscience is constantly in conflict with the values society has taught him. However, he eventually uses his own moral compass to make his choices.

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn was first published in 1884 in England and in 1885 in the United States. The illustrations were created by E.W. Kemble. The book sparked a controversy owing to its use of racial stereotypes and coarse language. It has since been adapted for film, theatre, and music. It is now considered a timeless classic and one of the Great American novels of all time.

Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri. After his father’s death, he took up employment as a printer’s apprentice at the age of 11. Over the years, he used public libraries to educate himself, and submitted several humorous sketches and articles to newspapers. He eventually became a steamboat pilot. In 1870, he married Olivia Langdon. The couple had three daughters - Susy, Clara, and Jean. Twain’s writing earned him much critical acclaim as well as commercial success. However, he lost a substantial amount of money due to failed investments. In 1907, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in letters (D. Litt) by the Oxford University. The deaths of his wife, two daughters, and close friend Henry in just over a decade’s time drove Twain into deep depression. He passed away on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut.
