Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Read Piers Paul|Author-English-Avon Books-Paperback_Edition-First First Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.460

Alive: The Story Of The Andes Survivors is the harrowing story of an Uruguayan rugby team and is a critically acclaimed work by the British author, Piers Paul Read.

Summary Of The Book

Alive: The Story Of The Andes Survivors documents the events concerning the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. The Uruguayan Rugby team is not just a college sports team but part of a life changing event.

The Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 contained the Rugby team. The airplane crashed into the Andes Mountains on the 13th of October, 1972. Only sixteen passengers were found alive out of the forty five people who were on that plane. After a rigorous search by the rescue team, the survivors were found eating the remnants of those already dead in order to survive.

To call this incident a mere accident would be reductive to say the least. These survivors lived to tell the tale that kept them alive in such an impossible situation. Piers Read puts together various interviews of the survivors.

Read also stated that fictionalizing the story, although necessary for some parts, was never required since the accounts of the survivors were heart wrenching on their own. The survivors did not just survive through instinct but they survived because of friendship and faith. These are the qualities that Read wished to impart through this story. One of the most notable things about the narrative is the combination of subjectivity and objectivity with which Read treats all the accounts in his stories.

Alive: The Story Of The Andes Survivors was received well critically. Many critics have called this book a great example of classic survival literature. Frank Marshall had directed the film adaptation of this novel, Alive: The Miracle of The Andes, in 1993. A documentary was made as its companion called Alive: The Miracle of The Andes.

About Piers Paul Read

Piers Paul Read was born on 7th March, 1941. He has won several awards for his novels but is also known as a biographer and historian.
He has also published works such as A Married Man, The Professor's Daughter, and A Season in the West.

Read found recognition with Alive: The Story Of The Andes Survivors. He has always been known to criticize middle class English ethics that are laced with Catholicism. Sin and salvation are also themes Read generally uses. Apart from being a writer, Read is also a scriptwriter and dramatist.

Still Alive!!!!

Hey all..this book is truly thrilling true story, the Gujarati version ("Jindagi Jindagi"-fm Safari Magazine) of which I hv read at least 7 times...when I first time completed it in the mid hot summer of my 12th class at ~ 2:30 in night..I was almost shivering in cold...thats the kind of impact it leaves u with... Mr. Paul Read is a bit dry in language but treats the subject with utmost care in a way that only TRUTH is read

at the height of 16000 ft in freezing cold, when u are left with nothing else but the raw flesh fm the human bodies, that too ur friends who were alive just a few days back....v cant even imagine this possibility...but adversity taught these sportsmen everything...

high in spirit .... sad yet penetrating adventure into human conscience

I wl still recommend the Gujarati version if u can read it n also "Miracles in Andes" by Nando Parado--one of the survivor...

ENGROSSING SAGA

A tale of indomitable courage against insurmountable odds where a group of survivors of a plane crash in the Andes mountains try to survive snow, avalanches, frostbite, cold and above all hunger. They see their friends die due to above and with no rescue in site decide to hike out of the mountains to seek help and rescue for them and their comrades.
The book will make you salute the raw spirit of human endurance and courage. A word of caution though...Other than the dramatic storyline and subsequent rescue this story also became infamous because the survivors had to eat the flesh of the dead passengers in order to survive...which amounts to cannibalism.
Great read...a must have for your personal library collection.

Disappointed...

I bought the paperback edition of this book reading so many good reviews about the book all over the internet. But i must say I'm a bit disappointed. The story of the survivors is a must read for all adventure lovers but the way the story has been told bar the reader from all the excitement. The author lacks the eloquent style of writing and the whole story has been told in somewhat of a documentary style.

In short the book is not worth 300 bucks.

A gripping true story

Alive is a true story of how a team of young rugby players crashed into the Andes mountains and how they survived. Its a tribute to the fighting spirit in each of us and humanity in general. Some of the passages may seem a little disturbing, but a true story needs to be told truthfully.
