The CPU is the 3rd fastest offering from AMD in the 4-core series, and given its price and performance, is the most cost efficient CPU. I advice buyers to check the "benchmarks on Anandtech" to compare the performance stats with other processors. The 4-core series seems to perform better than the 6-core offerings running at the same clock speed.
The CPU is fast , and has cut down my Win 7 startup time by nearly 40% ( I had a dual core 2.5 GHz CPU earlier) . It performs very well on CPU intensive games such as Shogun 2, Borderlands. Since replacing my old CPU, I have been able to run Skyrim with all advanced options maxed out at 1080p without a problem. ( My ancient and trusty HD4850 GPU deserves a small mention as well ;)
Cooling wise, the temps are relatively low. The CPU is currently running idle at around 31 degrees, but the Delhi winter might be contributing to that as well. This is with only stock cooling.
The one negative I did find was that the stock fan is bit too noisy . The noise is slowly reducing over days of usage, but I would still think it is above desirable limits. I plan to fix in a better CPU cooler after a while to replace the stock fan heatsink . This is not a major issue though , and I was kinda prepared for it too.. based on reviews on the net.
That said ... it is still a great product at its price. Performs well in general, and is very suited to my gaming needs. It would also do well on AM2 mobos and with DDR2 memory ,although the preferred interfaces are AM3 and DDR3. Just make sure your mobo supports a 125 W TDP processor before you make the buy. Also, AMD promises that this CPU gives great performace when paired with a Vision-enabled GPU, which I cannot account for.
One last thing ... Being a Black edition, the CPU is also good for overclocking, and I have personally managed to run this at about 4.0 GHz with very little increase in temps , with stock cooling. I did not even try higher clock speeds because the I still need to temper the CPU for a few weeks , but I am sure it would not be a problem getting this to run at around 4.2 GHz .
Although I have its younger brother (955 @ 3.2GHz), I want to write here on 970 page as 955 is not available on flipkart and both are just the same.
Phenom II processors are major competitors of Intel's i5 & i7 processors and they sell at half of intel's price.
* 4 Unlocked Cores gives freedom to tweek for any application
* processor performs better than the new Bulldozer FX-4100 in every aspect.
* Good for Multi-threaded applications like 2D & 3D applications
* NO OVERHEATING- some people say AMDs overheat a lot but mine never went beyond 43'C even playing heaviest games.
* Excellent Heatsink/Fan bundled in package with 4 copper pipes for advanced cooling.
* Windows Experience index (my 955 BE): 7.3 out of 7.9, just excellent for price you pay, this 970 would be even more.
* When compared to i3-2100 in single-threaded applications, it performs a bit (little) slower, but that doesn't effect much, Future is for multi-threading, & it is way better there.
* No other Cons.
i am presently using amd phenom 2 x4 940 3.0 ghz processor and before that i was using intel....before buying a new processors i was confused b/w intel or amd but now i can say amd is far better because they are providing the same quad core processor in the range of 5k-7k wheareas intel is just charging the brand value and they are providing u the i5 processor at the rate of 12000 or above ....so i suggest to buy amd and moreover the amd ati radeon graphic card market has taped the gamers market and they are providing the superior graphic card than nvidia ....so go for amd :)
Hi all i brought the processor from Flipkart. I had searched all sites and found that flipkart gives the best processor for your gaming needs. Never ever go for a AMD FX processors, bcoz they are module processors and doesn't give you the actual performance. FX processor can't be overclocked and you can't even unlock the latent cores. So go for AMD 3.5 GHz AM3 Phenom II 970 Processor[Black Edition].Best Quad processor, Best heatsink provided so that can unlock all cores and increase the clock speed. Super value for money.
1.True quad core(unlike fx4100)
2.powerful and at a reasonable price
3.Is a black edition chip and so overclocks easily(many ppl have it running at 4.2GHZ but I haven't overclocked it YET!
Supported by most AM3 and AM3+ motherboards without requiring a BIOS update.
Stock CPU cooler is WAAY too noisy and It hits 5000rpm at POST.So buy an aftermarket CPU cooler like the hyper 212
NOTE:When I bought this processor, the MRP on the box was Rs.12900 but on flipkart it only sells for 7680 which is a great discount!
