An ancient secret brotherhood. A devastating new
weapon of destruction. An unthinkable target.
World-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a cryptic symbol seared into the chest of a murdered physicist. What he discovers is unimaginable: a deadly vendetta against the Catholic Church by a centuries-old underground organization -- the Illuminati. Desperate to save the Vatican from a powerful time bomb, Langdon joins forces in Rome with the beautiful and mysterious scientist Vittoria Vetra. Together they embark on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth . . . the long-forgotten Illuminati lair.

For a moment, let's put aside all the controversies around Dan Brown's books (The Da Vinci Code I mean). If you consider this book, there are readers who have considered the debate between science and religion to be lame, there are readers who have considered it to be enlightening. Let's put all those debates and judgments aside.
This book excels at two levels. 1. For taking the reader into another world for a thrilling story. It's a place I've never been to, and will probably never be. 2. For its revetting storyline.
There is much criticism surrounding Dan Brown's books. Some historians hate it for their inaccuracies, some purists hate for its controversies, literary buffs hate it because it's not literature and they don't find it worthy for a read, critics hate it for a number of reasons including shallow characters, lack of language and blah and blah and blah.
If there is so much about Dan Brown already which is not good, then is this book worth reading? Yes! And I'll tell you why.
Dan Brown himself described Robert Langdon as an Indiana Jones in a tweed suit. What do you expect from an Indiana Jones movie? Pure fun. And that is what this book offers. It uses various elements such as the Vatican setting, an untraceable anti-matter stock running its clock towards doom, a symbologist running behind the unchasable, the roles of science and religion in modern times - they decay and progress, and most of all, the thin line that blurs between coincidence and faith and which challenges the modern mind with many unanswerable questions. But all these aspects are secondary. The book offers a world I had not met before. Its story was unique (similar to The Da Vinci Code, or maybe even the works of Dan Brown), but this book came before the Code.
I watched the movie immediately after I finished the book but the book has the upper hand (as is the case everytime). Pick up this book for a thrill ride and easy entertainment.
Ok it is indeed true that a lot of the sensational stuff in this book is made up & that is Brown's specialty. However having said that, if you can manage to suspend your disbelief, there is perhaps another thriller which will enthrall you so much. Angels & Demons is textbook material when it comes to what we describe as racy. In fact it is so fast & so gripping, that you wouldn't even realize that how the time has flown away & you have not even thought putting the book down. There is a lot of criticism by the purists regarding Brown's writing style or even his language.I am no expert but its easy for me to understand what he wants to convey & for that is just enough. His plots though often far fetched are tautly bound so you often get the feeling that you are actually watching a damn good action thriller. This without doubt is Brown's best work, yes I know he followed it up with The Da Vinci Code, but A&D is pure entertainment from the very first line. Don't know how did they messed up the movie. I'll read the book anytime compared to watching the film. A compelling read.
Mr. Brown is a marvelous storyteller as we all know. But, Angels and Demons is the best of all. Staying aside from controversial facts (like in the Da Vinci Code, this book has never got so much recognition. But, this is the best book I've ever read. It's a total epic. Harrowing from the fight of Science and Religion and the corridors of religious power, Angels and Demons will take you to a spectacular journey of thrill, when Science and religion will meet together to fight their real enemies. But, amongst all, Angels and Demons is my favourite due to two characters- not Robert Langdon, but Vittoria Vetra, and Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca. Here you would be allowed to peep into the lives of a scientist ruined for God ( Maximillan Kohler) and a person ruined due to a bomb blast in the corridors of GOd. The conclusion will make your heart fail. And the BBC journalists Gunther and Chinita who played an important role in this novel, have an awesome character.
In Angels and Demons, you'll experience emotions, lives , stories and above all the thrill. Not just a theological thriller - it's just an epic. Have a good read.
This book serves not only as a mystery thriller, but also stitches in the story some really exciting and mysterious real world facts which Brown uses amazingly to create a surreal picture of his fictitious world. The way he implements the Illuminati intrigues the reader, where every next page manages to keep the mystery of the plot alive and steady. At some points though, I found the writing to get somewhat tedious and perhaps even boring, but the end is well worth the time. At about forty pages left, I was beginning to get really frustrated as my anticipation of the Camerlengo saving the Church was almost becoming true. Not after I was done with the novel. It left me satisfied, and the journey through the story was great. :)
