Animal Farm (Paperback) Price: Rs.417

Both controversial and belief shattering, Animal Farm by George Orwell is one of the most acclaimed books of the World War period with its shocking satire of the Soviet Union.

Summary Of The Book

Animal Farm is one of the most controversial yet acclaimed books and is a devastating critique of the Soviet Union regime. The book details ignorance, wickedness, greed, indifference and myopia as factors contributing to corrupt and despotic leadership. Animal Farm is a biting satire of the Soviet Union using the disguise of a beast fable. All farm animals are called together by the boar Old Major where he denounces parasitic humans and teaches them a song of rebellion. Thereafter, the pigs Napoleon and Snowball take command after his death and start preparations for their rebellion. Mr. Jones is driven away and there are seven Animalism commandments that all farm inmates have to follow. Napoleon and Snowball teach these principles, writing and reading while the farm becomes a self-sustaining one. Slowly, these pigs start keeping special eatables for themselves and become embroiled in a power struggle.

Animal Farm is a satirical depiction of the rebellion of farm animals against their own human masters. However, their slogan of equality changes towards the end. A committee of pigs start ruling the farm and Napoleon eventually establishes his own tyranny over all other animals. The pigs establish their slogan where some animals are more equal than others. There is also the battle against neighboring farmer Mr. Frederick which threatens to destabilise their independence. At the end, the other animals cannot distinguish between the ruler pigs and humans. Animal Farm is the historical account of a revolution gone wrong and of the excuses that were presented at every juncture. It is a bitter attack on the Stalinist regime which allied with Britain at the time. The book was refused by a variety of publishers owing to its controversial content; it was first published in Britain in 1945. Animal Farm has sold millions of copies across the world since then.

True Agony of a Socialist

Orwell is obviously angry at the way Socialism has been distorted by Stalin. Using Animal characters as symbols Orwell honestly mocks and criticizes the Russian leadership under Lenin. It is a very easy to read book giving good perspectives on the Socialist Revolution.

A political Satire

Animal Farm is a satirical allegory on the Russian Revolution. Orwell explains it, “It is the history of revolution that went wrong.” It tells the simple and tragic story of what happens when the oppressed farm rebel to attain freedom from Mr. Jones. It is about their attempt to rule the farm themselves on the basis of equality.

The animals had initially aimed to form a utopian society, where each would work according to his capacity, respecting the needs of the others. But, they failed to do so. And, “Animal Farm” ended up being a dictatorship of the pigs that were the brightest,...

And, “Animal Farm” ended up being a dictatorship of the pigs that were the brightest, but did no physical work in reality. The main action of the story stands for The Russian Revolution of 1917 and the early years of the Soviet Union. Animalism is a metaphor for Communism. Manor farm is an allegory of Russia, Mr. Jones is Russian C-Zar, Old Major stands for Karl Marx, and Snowball represents Leo Trotsky. Napolean stands for Stalin, while the dogs are the secret police. The horse, Boxer stands for the working class which works constantly for the greater good while Squealer is the propagandist.

The novel is skillfully organized and presents the horrors of communism through simple story-telling. It presents what propaganda and brain washing do to the people living under the dictatorship. How the fickle minded people were swayed easily by the pigs, who managed to reverse the seven commandments and reduce them to “Four legs good, two legs better”.

I would recommend this book to everyone above 14 years of age who has some knowledge about communism or a hint of what happened during the Russian Revolution of 1917. The book is gripping as there is always something happening. It ends with the pigs becoming mush like humans and changing the name of the farm back to the “Manor Farm”. The ending was sad it shows how power turns “comrades” into tyrannical dictators.

Best political satire i've ever read

I bought this book and finished it in a single sitting. It is a small book with characters taken from a farm - like in children's stories. The style of narration is that which you come across in fairy tales. This books contains very few dialogues between the characters in the story. Everything is told in a manner of actions of the characters. The main characters are two pigs Snowball and Napoleon. They are like our everyday politicians who promise us a lot but we end up with almost nothing. The book parodies the style of socialist government that existed in USSR, that which was run by the p... Everything is told in a manner of actions of the characters. The main characters are two pigs Snowball and Napoleon. They are like our everyday politicians who promise us a lot but we end up with almost nothing. The book parodies the style of socialist government that existed in USSR, that which was run by the powerful Joseph Stalin. Some say this book is meant to directly ridicule Stalin and his policies, but I have nowhere come across a paragraph where he directly ridicules him. The ridiculing is done to the policies in Socialism in general. Like where in socialist governments All people are equal(but some people get much more than the others), here in the farm they use the same policy(All animals are equal) but later on its changed to All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others!

This book has one of the best covers I've come across. i paid a bit more to get this cover. Its styled in Red and Scarlet and black with a matte finish. The pig on the cover is a highlight!

Written in a style of narration which people can confuse as it being an essay. But never a moment does it get dull. The humour in this book is timeless and epic. There are moments in this book which are so heart wrenching and written in such a simple matter-of-fact manner with no panache or pizzaz that other writers will feel like they need to re-visit their skills as a narrator. Orwell is a master of of the way the human mind thinks. He expresses so much with so less. The conclusion is one of the best conclusions i've ever read(Only next to 'The Fountainhead'). Here as well he refrains from using big words and punchy lines. It ends as simple as it begins, but the mind you, you will have gathered more than what is written there.

Old yet contemporary!

The story of Animal Farm was written by George Orwell sometime ago, 1945 to be exact, whereas this story still finds its match in contemporary settings. That's the brilliance of George!!

How his pack of animals can be equated with real life scenarios and yet they are so convincing.

Fully empathise with the Character of Boxer Horse, "I will work harder" and "Napoleon is always right" despite the corruption.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this marvellous piece of literature. A must read!

A Brutal Satire On The Ruling Elite

Although I wouldn’t give away the plot, the story metamorphically portrays how the so called leaders of revolution corner for themselves and their progeny all the benefits while the rest are subject to all kinds of hardship.

The tale of animals severely lampoons the attempts of the political masters in altering even the basic tenets of the revolution to suit their individual needs and the grand lies they devise to cover up their shortcomings – and ultimately the political masters regardless of their hues are left without any distinction.

The allegorical insinuation towards Stalin’s reign of terror provided enough ammunition to Russia and other Communist countries to proscribe the book. In short a must read political caricature.

Animal Farm, an awesome book

It's basically the story of communism told in the setting of a farm. The animals, led by pigs revolt against the cruel human farm owner, one pig, sort of Karl Marx takes over and tries to turn the farm into a sort of Utopia with guidelines to prevent animals from ever becoming like man, but he's...
