Anna Karenina 2nd Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.693

In 1872 the mistress of a neighbouring landowner threw herself under a train at a station near Tolstoy s home. This gave Tolstoy the starting point he needed for composing what many believe to be the greatest novel ever written. In writing Anna Karenina he moved away from the vast historical sweep of War and Peace to tell, with extraordinary understanding, the story of an aristocratic woman who brings ruin on herself. Anna s tragedy is interwoven with not only the courtship and marriage of Kitty and Levin but also the lives of many other characters. Rich in incident, powerful in characterization, the novel also expresses Tolstoy s own moral vision. `The correct way of putting the question is the artist s duty , Chekhov once insisted, and Anna Karenina was the work he chose to make his point. It solves no problem, but it is deeply satisfying because all the questions are put correctly.

A Sensitive Translation

My first version of Anna Karenina was an abridged Assamese translation, which I read in my school days. Then the next was the Maude translation, which is the oldest version and still the most widely read. But after reading it (which is quite good, despite being a 100 years old, it must be granted) I came to know about the present Richard Peaver version of the book. By far, this is the best translation that I have read. After going through it, you can really imagine the rhythm and undulations of Tolstoy's vigorous Russian. This version of Anna Karenina should be read by even those who have read the book in other [English] translations. And about the book? The previous reviewer has said it all.

Difficult read

For me, this was an extremely difficult book to go through. While the story of Anna Karenina and Vronsky is very interesting, 80% of the book is dedicated to Levin (apparently a self potrait of Tolstoy) and russian farming which is SO SO SO boring! Had the portions of the book dedicated to Levin been eliminated altogether, I would say the book is definitely worth a read! The only reason I made it to the end is because half way though the book, I started to skip those part completely. Surprising that Tolstoy decided to name the book 'Anna Karenina' when so little of it is devoted to her! All in all, disappointing after all the hype surrounding this novel.
As for flipkart, their service, as always, was exemplary!

Definition of a Novel

This could well be the definition of a 'Novel'. The extent to which he is descriptive is amazing. Every situation, sequence and characters are painstakingly described... I wonder how could someone have so much of patience and imagination. If you are my type who likes a fast paced story... This is not for you... for a person who loves imagining and taking their own sweet time in savoring the juices of a Novel... go ahead... you wouldn't have chosen a better one.

a great translation of a great work

one of the best translations i have read no doubt he got the award for best translation for this work. the book is great and so is the translation. the story is very touching band Tolstoy has perfectly portrayed Anna Karenina's fall from grace. the guy who talked about Tolstoy's ability for "psychological eavesdropping" cannot be wrong
