Book: Apologia Pro Vita Sua John Henry Newman (1801 - 1890) was a Roman Catholic cardinal. In 1991 he was proclaimed Venerable. As a young man he was active in the Oxford Movement which tried to bring the Church of England back to its catholic roots. After his conversion to Catholicism he wrote many influential books. After joining the Catholic Church many Protestant clergymen criticized his decision and questioned his faith. Charles Kingsley in particular attacked Newman. Newman's response was to write Apologia pro Vita Sua, which is a spiritual autobiography. In this work Newman explores the depth of Christianity.
