The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture And Identity (Paperback) Price: Rs.891

The book is a collection of prize-winning essays on public debate and intellectual pluralism in Indian history.

Summary Of The Book

Basing The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture And Identity in as simple a tradition as Calcutta’s ‘addas’ or a gathering of people at street corners to discuss everything from politics to cricket, Amartya Sen explains that this spirit of discussion is deeply ingrained within the people of India. And it is this healthy expression of opinions, debates and discussions which involves India’s many ethnic groups, opines Sen, that will lead to the success of democracy and the downplaying of India's caste system and inequalities. He goes on to say that this acceptance, personal modification and rejection of another’s views is what makes Indians liberal in contradiction to the general view that it is a product of Western influence. In actuality, he says, Indians have a unique quality where they assimilate ideas from Western culture into their own.

Extensive is what one would say about the The Argumentative Indian: Writings on Indian History, Culture And Identity, where Sen talks of Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray in his essays and how they are examples of liberal Indias. He openly challenges many widely held beliefs about Indians, like the belief that human rights are inherently Western concepts, and he does so with finesse and with a barrage of examples from old and modern India. He expresses many of his own views while politely arguing with the opinions put forth by influential people worldwide. The fact that he takes his readers through a variety of examples to prove his points is one of the book’s most interesting features.
What has to be said about the book is that it breaks away from the usual perceptions that both Westerners and Indian people have and provides readers with a new way of looking at India.

India and her culture - Amartya Sen at his most eloquent

The book is a collection of essays on contemporary India, its plurality, culture and argumentative tradition, written by author over a period of time. All of the essays bear the hallmarks of author's authoritative scholarly range over such topics as social economic theory, ethics and political philosophy, welfare economics, development economics, public health, and gender studies. These essays are part academic study, but is often enlivened by (eg: essay on Tagore, Satyajit Ray) his personal recollections and a deep admiration for the traditions and broad Indian culture that has made him an economist of a different class altogether. This book has been criticized over selective reading of historic facts that generally suits author's own thesis of the multicultural and inclusive Indian identity, but that criticism fades away after reading what we (a reader) see as the author's unconditional optimism about the virtues of democratic values in human life and the need to sustain this wonderful tradition in future.

This knowledge, distilled from his study of Indian culture is quite possibly an apt lesson for a world citizen.

Great Reading ! A must for Every Indian.

The books deals Indian History & Culture in the perspective in which the emphasis has been given on highlighting the secular contribution like science , mathematics, astronomy ,literature etc of India to the world and stand taken by Indian Intellectuals vis a vis their counterparts in the world on these subject across the ages . It has tried to change the paradigm of western way of looking at India where it is primarily perceived as a land of Spiritualism & Mysticism and instead the book has tried to highlight the secular contribution(and hence Identity) of India with its historical tradition of relying on reasoning, debate, heterodoxy, pluralism etc. That current political ideology of some sections of Indian polity is helping this narrow political western viewpoint by presenting an isolationist Indian history & culture being contributed only by single culture .The ancient Indo-Chinese interaction has been dealt in length which otherwise is left in other books due to over stress on western interactions. The book also covers in detail gender inequality and class difference putting forward important statistics making it an insightful reading. Pluralism, present iconoclasm about secularism and Indian Identity, individually and collectively , has been covered very well.

Review of "The Argumentative Indian"

Argumentative Indian is a masterpiece on skepticism of Indian culture and tradition which was narrated by the Nobel prize winner in a striking manner. It also deals with the traditional history of Indian over two and half millennia. There is a lot of controversy over the religions that were born in India and the religions that came into India due to the Foreign invasions and Amartya Sen has given a complete cognition in a precise manner that is acceptable by all Indians. Amartya Sen has given the views of some of the greatest Indians such as the Mahatma and Gurudev "Tagore" who are of the same era. He has also included the scenario at time of BJP led India from 1998-2004. Obviously I can say that it is a book that can be admired by all Indians.
