  • Description

Krishna Udayasankar’s The Aryavarta Chronicles: Govinda is the first book of the Aryavarta Chronicles. It is an ancient Indian mythology series. It is a deconstructed re-telling of The Mahabharata, and is a tale of adventure, intrigue and conspiracy.

    Summary of the Book

Aryavarta is the kingdom of the noble and has been ruled for centuries by the first dynasty of sages, who were the descendants of Vashishta Varuni, Brahma’s oldest son. The realm of the noble, has been dominated for centuries by the Firstborn Dynasty of Sages, whose ancestor was Vasishta Varuni, Lord Brahma’s oldest son. They were responsible for maintaining peace and order on Earth. The Firewrights are the King’s weapon makers who defied the sages, eventually leading to a battle between them. This results in Aryavarta getting divided into several kingdoms.

When the last Secret Keeper of the Firewrights dies, the kingdom of Aryavarta faces a serious threat from its enemies. Vyasa in order to protect the kingdom wants to overthrow the ruling King, and thus starts an epic battle for the throne. Govinda, an erstwhile cowherd and now the Commander of the Dwaraka armies must do his best to protect his people from the conflict. As the entire kingdom of Aryavarta stands divided and drowns in betrayal, brother fighting brother and deception, the innocent people are sacrificed.

Good Narrating And Language, Story Just Average

Well, I think I should give my ratings for this book taking into consideration two things
    1. Writing
    2. Story

    Let's start with writing

Well I think her language is impeccable and her narrating astounding. It's the best I have seen among Indian Authors( like Amish Tripathi, Chetan Bhagat, Ashwin Sangwi etc...)..
Her language is not completely simple like Chetan Bhagat's nor too complex which makes it an exceptionally good read for its rich and at the same time lucid language..

    Very Good

When I first came across this book, I will be honest I couldn't help but compare it with the shiva trilogy. As you read on you realise the author Krishna is creative as well as beautifully descriptive with her words. You see the scenes she narrates so effectively rolling before you as she unfolds the epic in her own way. This is not a direct adaptation of the Mahabharata but the author has made significant changes to some of the characters and even names. This book in particular revolves ...

    Delightful

I received the book on day 4 and it was in a good condition. The sole reason behind ordering the book was curiosity - I had got mixed reviews about the series And, as a personal Mahabharat fan, had to check it out.

The author, on her part, has undertook a great deal of research And, let's face it - to expect a Devdutt Pattanaik level of research would be injustice. The plot is complex, no doubt, but the great array of characters that are essentially the part of the epic make it an inevitabil...

    Must read.

I genuinely loved the book. It just made me fall in love with the Krishna. I mean this tells the same old epic but from a different angle. It was like being a part of the story, Every little description of the characters, place etc is so good. The characters you initially hated will be the ones you will love by the end of the book. All i say is "ITS A MUST READ".

Awesome advice wrapped in a package of even better language

A bit of the history is off, but a bit; that's it. The characterization of all the illustrious characters from the Mahabharata is beyond just awesome. There is no sympathy syndrome for the few noble Kauravas nor any hero worship for the few not-so-worthy Pandavas. The gyan of the Gita has been expertly re-written in language understandable to the masses while not felling their glory in any way. The grip on the language never falters for one second for the young author. Definitely looking forw...

    Great Novel

Nice book, it has improved my imagination skills, going depth and crest of the story and making each every story with enthusiasm of What's going to happen next? The writer has molded the story such a way that it forms a perfect linking of the stories chapter by chapter.

Another view of Mahabaratha from a 21st century Bard

I have read Mahabharata from various authors and few TV serials. Devdutt Patnaik, presented many different views by collecting the folklore across India. Krishna Udhayashankar's story is very very different. This is a true *fiction* portrayed very effectively based on the core characters of the players in Mahabharata.

I loved the characterization and activities of every individual in the story, though the story line is very different from what Vyasa have portrayed. And the book is compelling...

    Not well researched

I bought both this and the sequel. When retelling an epic, there has to be good amount of research and loose ends should be avoided. But from this book, it looks like author wants to emphasise a couple of points and some philosophy and has modified everything to just suit that. That would have been fine if good research was done and loose ends tied up.

    Not very interesting

From flipkart side the delivery was prompt as usual, so no comments there! Completely satisfied with their service.

However, the book was not what I had expected. I felt the author did not do a good job with the story. Too many plots and much too many characters being introduced all along. I found it hard to keep track of the story, the characters and the places; too many of these were introduced at random and taken away too soon, only to be brought back after maybe another 20-30 pages (atle...
