Book Summary of The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World

Niall Ferguson follows the money to tell the human story behind the evolution of finance, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest upheavals on what he calls Planet Finance.
Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot, lucre, moolah, readies, the wherewithal: Call it what you like, it matters. To Christians, love of it is the root of all evil. To generals, itas the sinews of war. To revolutionaries, itas the chains of labor. But in "The Ascent of Money," Niall Ferguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress. Whatas more, he reveals financial history as the essential backstory behind all history.
Through Fergusonas expert lens familiar historical landmarks appear in a new and sharper financial focus. Suddenly, the civilization of the Renaissance looks very different: a boom in the market for art and architecture made possible when Italian bankers adopted Arabic mathematics. The rise of the Dutch republic is reinterpreted as the triumph of the worldas first modern bond market over insolvent Habsburg absolutism. And the origins of the French Revolution are traced back to a stock market bubble caused by a convicted Scot murderer.
With the clarity and verve for which he is known, Ferguson elucidates key financial institutions and concepts by showing where they came from. What is money? What do banks do? Whatas the difference between a stock and a bond? Why buy insurance or real estate? And what exactly does a hedge fund do?
This is history for the present. Ferguson travels to post-Katrina New Orleans to ask why the free market canat provide adequate protection against catastrophe. He delves into the origins of the subprime mortgage crisis.
Perhaps most important, "The Ascent of Money" documents how a new financial revolution is propelling the worldas biggest countries, India and China, from poverty to wealth in the space of a single generationaan economic transformation unprecedented in human history.
Yet the central lesson of the financial history is that sooner or later every bubble burstsasooner or later the bearish sellers outnumber the bullish buyers, sooner or later greed flips into fear. And thatas why, whether youare scraping by or rolling in it, thereas never been a better time to understand the ascent of money.

Content good, narration awful!

“The ascent of money” gives an account of the financial history of the world. With this book the author has tried to cover the beginnings of every financial instrument present – banking, bonds, stock market, insurance and mortgage. Almost each of these instruments has their roots in Europe where they started around 15th or 16th century. Reasons for their start-up were sometimes obvious and sometimes a little less so. Usury was in-fact punishable by the clergy for some time. Bond market started when the Italian govt. was at war and wanted to raise the money. The evolution of stock market, insurance and mortgage are also pretty intriguing. The book covers the famous “bubbles and bursts” including, but not restricted to - the hyperinflation of Germany, the great depression and the subprime crisis. Legends of Nathan Rothschild and John Law also find their way in the text.

However, the language of the book is obscure, to say the least. At times, one has to go over a line again and again to comprehend its meaning. The text is unstructured without any continuity. The author has been presumptuous and written as if every reader has an in-depth knowledge of the financial world. After almost every line I had to wiki something. Summing up – content good, narration awful. Read it only if you have either one of enough knowledge or enough patience!

An Excellent Read

This book is an excellent narrative of the financial history of the world, explaining very vividly describing the formation of the banking system and capital markets as we know of it today, along with the infamous 'bubbles' and busts that the world saw. I loved the book!

Truly Amazing !!

1. Whenever credit is available for cheap there shall be a bubble shaping up.
2. Inflation happens when money in circulation is more than economic output.

By a continuing process of inflation, the government can secretly confiscate, an important part of wealth of their citizens. While the process impoverishes many, it enriches some.

Descriptive and Vividly Written!

The book sails back in times and help us track the origin of money. It covers the major finincial products(Loans, debts etc) divided in chapters and biulds for each of them the growth curve. It also highlights the role and impact of finance with major landmarks in the history which primarly does not seem to be a financial event.

A well researched with a great narration.
