More about unearthing.

Read this book. Impressed how the colonial Brits dug up the past history of Buddhist India. Well without their pioneering zeal this history would have been totally lost under Hindu bigotry. Which indeed happened. Hindu resurgence and consequent decline of Buddhism followed by successive Muslim invasions had totally obliterated a glorious past. Who would believe today that much before the Muslims invaders Hindus had desecrated and vandalized Buddhist shrines! How painstakingly William Jones an...

Indology and Ashoka

Very often we hear that Indians do not have a sense of their history or there is not enough recorded history. Many writers in the recent past have contested this view with examples of our ancient literature including the Vedas which go back many thousands of years and the Puranas which have records until the medieval ages. But it is also true that there are not many comprehensive historical accounts of India by Indian sources covering until the first millennium or if they did exist, they were...

Fascinating

It is amazing that Indians in the 18th. century did not know about Ashoka. How the British Indologists and archaeologists discovered his history and magnificent work is a fascinating tale. It has been brought out in vivid and fascinating detail by the author.
The pioneering work of Sir William Jones, James Princep , Alexander Cunningham and a host of others, including Indian archeologists like Bhandarkar has been brought out beautifully.
How dates have been worked out using synchronicity wi...

Great Book

Got it at a great price - pre-booked. Delivered unbelievably fast too. A very well written account of the Mauryan era. The clue by clue piecing together of the lost legacy of Ashoka makes it as un-putdownable as a racy detective story. The author laments the reluctance of India, even now, in giving its greatest ever monarch the respect he deserves. Perhaps a greater loss to India is its selective amnesia of the Buddhist legacy. The rise and fall of this great religion in India is also woven ...

A wonderful read

A really great book. It's not just another biography of the great emperor of ancient India. It's all about the research that led us to Asoka. How we discovered him, and knew about him. A must read for history lovers.

Mesmerising

As an Indian, one always wonder why we forget about the greatest king that the world has seen: not in terms of his rule, but the message he delivered to the entire world through the promotion of Buddhism: Ahimsa.

This book does quench the curiosity, and in a way, urges us to look back at the legacy of our ancestors in a more proud and dignified manner.

A great book

This is a gripping tale about the greatest ruler that India has seen in the known history : Emperor Ashoka Maurya. More than just Ashoka's life it deals with the fact that how we due to our religious biases (including pre Muslim rule) had consciously erased Ashoka from our memories or writings, how just due to love or obsession of few British officers his existence was found, piece by piece put together and brought out. Many people lost their lives as well in process of this discovery
