Asterix The Gaul is part of a comic series written and developed by Rene Goscinny, and is the first book in the Asterix series of books. The books in this series are set in France during the time of the Roman conquest. The conquest is set after the Romans capture the whole of Gaul, except for one small village that holds out against them and resists all their efforts. This village is supported by a magic potion that is brewed by the village druid Getafix, which gives superhuman strength to all those who drink it. In this story, Centurion Crismus Bonus, who is the head of the Roman garrison, tries to find the secret behind the super strength of the Gauls. He succeeds in uncovering the secret of the magic potion using a spy, and plans to brew the potion for himself in order to overthrow Julius Caesar. Crismus Bonus captures Getafix and tortures him to make the potion for him, with the help of Marcus Ginandtonicus, his second-in-command. The hilarious comic shows how Asterix penetrates the camp to free Getafix, and how they fool the Romans together.

I read this book some 10-15 years back, on from then on I fell in love with this series. A hilarious story, in an unusual plot, with superb set of characters and dialogues, told in an amazing way. A must read for all the kids and teenagers, and for everyone. It gives you a fresh air of laughter and childish fun(even all the grown ups need this to stay sane). I'm not sure why the name of the artist Albert Uderzo was not mentioned in authors section.
