Asus DRW-24D3ST DVD Burner Internal Optical Drive

Hey Fellas,
I bought this drive in my market. This is same as that of the
"Asus DRW-24B3ST Internal Optical Drive (Black)". The specs posted here dint include everything . prefer this. this is a best one out in the market

I needed to replace my dvd writer. Samsung dvd writers are so fragile and mine stopped working within its warranty period. Replaced that with this one. much more solid feel to it.

What really sucks is that this dvd writer can't write dvds below 6x speed. When say, you have to write a dvd of an OS like Win 7 or linux, or any thing that needs really slow burning, this doesn't go below 6x. Tested both on + and - DVD-Rs. I don't know if there is a problem with my combination of writer + burning software (Ashampoo burning studio 11), but it happens so in my computer. Somebody else who has bought it has to check this and confirm.

Otherwise, very much recommended. I take out 1 star because of that.

This is my 5th DVD writer.. I owned 4 LG drives earlier.. Before I purchased this, I read reviews.. but I think I ran out of Luck.. I got the drive in 2 days of ordering from Flipkart..(Greeat Service) and Forgot totally after Fitting in the CPU.. and was busy with exams.. now I switch on the PC and notice my PC was making strange noises.. thought some Fan is gone.. but Then noticed This ASUS drive's Light was continuously on even without any CD/DVD inside.. and Ejecting it stopped stop the Light and The sound both.. and not only this , it is not able to read any CD or DVD.. and I have NEVER used this drive before.. not even single disc read or write... now if I go to service centre they will replace my brand new drive with some Refurbished one.. and I would have pad Rs. 1050/- for a REFURBISHED PRODUCT.. very POOR QUALITY CONTROL ON PART OF ASUS.. they should have a policy to replace the drive with a new one if brought in within 3 month of purchase... My LG drives lasted good 5-8 years.. but this one not even 5-7 Hours.. before this I used to advise people o stay away from SONY DVD writers due to high failure rates... Now I think I would have same advice about ASUS DVD writers too.
EDIT: They Gave a Boxed New drive for replacement.. but after few days..The Replacement drive Met the same Fate.. NOw gave them back again.. and Waiting For Re-Replacement.. Very Bad..

I Lost Trust in ASUS' quality.. My ASUS Motherboard "M5A78L-M LX" (not V2) gave me problem from day 1.. Finally I Got fed up and gave to service center after tolerating for 8 months.. they repaired and gave back.. But Then it hanged 6 times in 36 hours.. so Finally they Gave replacement for MoBo too.. Mean while I ordered a new Gigabyte Motherboard Gigabyte "GA-78LMT-USB3".. same chipset.. working like charm wihtout problem.. I Don't think I am gonna even remove this replacement board fgrom the Box... unless I have to ..

This DVD Writer is giving good higher speeds. I can write the CD-Rs in a minute. The max speed for writing DVD-Rs are also good. But the following are the problems that I found with this product, by experimenting:

1. The writer cannot write DVD-Rs below 6x speed, even if I force it.
2. The writer cannot write CD-Rs below 16x speed, even if I force it.
3. It is impossible to control the speed when writing DVD-RWs and CD-RWs. The writer takes the max speed specified on the media, even if I specify my own speed which is lower.

The above are NOT problems with my software or my Operating System. They are the defects of the Asus Writer itself (I have verified the same media with another Writer). While this remains as a defect, there is no reason to limit yourself to lower speeds unless if the default speed setting messes up the media.

4. When compared with the old DVD drives that I have, the quality of the Front Panel Material is lesser. Also the tray shakes horizontally after ejecting, like a toy. :-)
5. The flipkart packing is excellent. But the box is not sealed, which makes the company packing useless.

I can give only 3 Rating.

Previously i had LG IDE DVD writer, it served me till 5 yrs after that my search began for new writers in market(online). I read reviews of asus from flipkart and made my mind to give it a try, also many asus service centers are available across india..ASUS dvd writer comes with 4 softwares(nero 10,power2go,E-green and E-hammer) and 4-srews..:D

Cyberlink Power2go software is used for burning purpose but it is not the activated version(still it will work),E-green displays energy consumption of ASUS drive,E-hammer is used to destroy data permanently from discs..and if you are running Windows XP SP1/SP2 please upgrade to SP3 as nero 10 will not be installed..ASUS drive is really silent..at first i was scared, is my drive working!!!..there is really different noise when drive is detected(its like ''suss..suss'')..i have tried multi-session DVDs on this drive which was burned from my previous LG writer..there is only one problem i have encountered till now is while installing nero 10 on autoplay..the drive and system both gets busy but installation doesn'nt start..So, i had to explore ASUS CD and install nero 10..else everything is perfect!!!..and also THANKS TO FLIPKART FOR SUCH GREAT PACKING AND DELIVERY..:)
