Asus K53SV-SX521D / Core i7 / 8 GB / 750 GB / Free DOS

This is an incredible piece of hardware for the price. A true budget gaming laptop, GT540M graphics is more than enough for nearly all modern games at medium settings [some will actually be playable at higher settings too, but some demanding ones may require lower settings].

How this can be EVEN BETTER:
01. A backlit keyboard.
02. A higher resolution screen [maybe atleast 1600x900].
03. A Blu-ray burner / Blu-ray rom drive [GT540M can handle it easily].

And to a lesser extent:
01. A better webcam [1.3MP or 2MP].
02. GT550M/GT555M card [GT540M will never be able to harness 2GB of VRAM in full].
Its a near perfect configuration still.

I bought this a few days ago, and upgraded the hard-drive to 7200 RPM right after buying. I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the older reviews stating that it's using cheap hardware components, but I'm glad to disregard them now.

Good Things:

* I'm able to run Skyrim on High with no lag, and on Ultra with a little lag, and Batman: Arkham City on max graphics settings; so the graphics card is top notch.
* I've played both the games above on a 40-something inch Sony Bravia TV, and it's mind-blowing. So I can't doubt the HDMI port's quality.
* Transfers via USB 3.0 went at around 60 MB/s.
* The laptop stays cool throughout intensive gameplay, with only the region near the vents blowing out hot air (obviously, a good thing).
* Fedora 16 and Windows 7 both boot under 15 seconds, but this is after the upgrade to 7200 RPM.

Where They've Cut Costs:

* 5400 RPM is a pretty slow hard drive.
* The webcam is pretty useless.
* The touchpad buttons are clunky.
* No backlit keyboard.
* Max resolution on the internal display is 1366x768.

amazaing classy design..with first impression of being wow..alluminium feels gr8 bit heavy for portabilty though...the signs of wifi n capslock etc..are printed n appears tht they will rub off.....i am not sure abt it though...

Pros:
* Decent looks (although not breathtaking)
* Great keyboard, the chicklet keyboard is one of the best keyboards I have worked on..
* Good performance.. Installed 64bit windows 7 and it took nearly 35secs for booting (which isnt bad). Win7 rating is 5.9. Able to run most games without difficulty.
* Wrist area never heats up.. Even after hours of normal usage and a few hours of gaming remains substantially cool.
* Comes with usb 3.0 which is great in this price segment.. Although havent tested the transfer rate with a usb3.0 device.
* The multi touch gesture support of touchpad was a nice packed in surprise (really useful when browsing through picture folders).

Cons:
* Viewing angles of the display is not as good as my 5 years old acer notebook.
* Webcam

Tradeoffs:
* Resolution is a little less for a 15 incher.
* Hard drive could have been a faster one.
* Would have been happy with a slightly extended battery life..(right now 1.5 hrs on gaming)

Got it delivered within 36 hours and its a fabulous piece of machinery! No other brand comes even close to it at this price pint (other with similar specs are at least 20-30% costlier). Looks and feels great. Heating is minimum thanks to well placed cooling fan. Those deterred by lack of windows, don't be. I installed Linux (Ubuntu 11.1) and it works very well. It does everything that could be expected of a Windows OS. My take...ORDER IT!!
