Bryson describes how the entire world can be fit into what is called the home. He ponders upon visiting every room and observing the importance of it. He begins with the hall, by describing the architecture, doors, windows, chimneys, etc. He then moves on to the kitchen, detailing the importance of nutrition, the expertise involved in food processing, the spice trade, and the diverse food habits of people. Bryson goes on to elaborate on the bedroom, the hallway, the bathroom, the dining room, the drawing room, the attic, the cellar, the garden, the nursery, the plum room, the dressing room, and other rooms that are usually found in a Victorian house.

    About Bill Bryson

    Bill Bryson is a writer of travel books. While he was in the UK, he temporarily worked as a journalist before becoming a full-time writer. His books talk about his trips to different parts of Europe, Africa and Australia. His work, Notes from a Small Island, won him the World National Book Poll in 2003. He has also been honoured with the Samuel Johnson Prize and the Descartes Prize for Science Communication. Bryson's other famous books include A Walk in the Woods, The Lost Continent, Mother Tongue, Made in America, and A Really Short History of Nearly Everything.

    Excellent collection of random trivia!

    The book starts off somewhat in Usual Suspects style, picking and naming things in the room (& then the rooms themselves).

    But the real genius of this book is when it traces it outdoors and into history. For instance, the bathroom chapter for a certain period deals only with the epidemics & marvels at the fact we invented the telephone before discovering washing hands prevents diseases (well, the western world at least).
