The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a principle-centered approach to solving professional and personal problems. Through anecdotes and personal insights, Covey presents a step-by-step methodology for working and living well, based on natural laws. According to Covey, recognizing and understanding these natural laws will give individuals the power and wisdom to grab opportunities that change necessitates.
The book begins by introducing readers to a paradigm shift or a different way of thinking. Once this concept is understood, Covey proceeds with discussing his 7 habits.

The first three habits, are categorized under the heading, ‘Independence’. It encourages people to develop self mastery, or a change from dependence to independence. This requires an individual to make effective decisions, and accept the consequences which ensue. Introspection and envisioning life goals are another facet of the first three habits. After managing oneself, a person can manage others, and this requires physical creation.

The next three habits are categorized under, ‘Interdependence’, and they teach about how to work with others. Here, Covey teaches readers how to arrive at beneficial decisions for all who are involved, how to listen empathically, before being understood, and how to combine strengths of different people in order to create positive teamwork. About Stephen Covey

Stephen Covey was an American businessman, keynote speaker, author, and educator.

He authored several best selling books, including The 3rd Alternative: Solving Life's Most Difficult Problems, First Things First, and The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness .

Covey completed his MBA degree at Harvard University. He went on to receive several Honorary Doctorates from various universities. Covey was an athlete during his youth, and maintained his love of cycling throughout his adult life. In 1997, he established The Covey Leadership Center, which is a global-professional company and retailer which sells productivity tools and training materials to various organizations and individuals. Covey was married to Sandra, and had nine children with her. He passed away in 2012 from complications that arose due to a biking accident.
