The work of a genius

I have read quite a few other books, by different authors. I have read Dan Brown, Paulo Coelho, Sidney Sheldon, books like Catch-22, etc.; and I have appreciated their writing style. But only when I read Ayn Rand did I feel how is it posible to write so well? How is she able to relate her philosophies to worldy things so that when she constructs a sentence, they complement each other perfectly. Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead are true masterpieces. One may not agree completely with the philosophies, but it is always good to read them as they help us understand different view points, and in... ()

One may not agree completely with the philosophies, but it is always good to read them as they help us understand different view points, and in the process enrich our experience and help us come to our own conclusions. I give 5 star to each of these books.

The Masterpiece

I am her fan so are millions of other, Atlas Shrugged is an application of the philosophy said in Fountain Head.
If Fountain head is great; then Atlas Shrugged is mesmerizing beauty; its exceptional. Author never keeps the content simple as she wants that only those who are committed to her work should be entitled to have the pleasure of understanding the content.

Facts:

In Fountain Head, the character of Howard Roak remains sketchy, some think that HR is not practical and some belief that he does value money. All those answers are given in complete detail in Atlas Shrugged.

This book needs patience, above average intellect and faith

Theme:

Its unconventional but its very much valid. PPl who can have brains wants to go on strike so that ppl who has less brain should understand their code of morals.
The story is intriguing and has a soul.

Pros:

The entire thought process about the kind of work you do will change, the value of being selfish will be redefined

You might get the best time while going through the last 200 pages

You will fall in love as in when Daggny Taggart's character will evolve.

Cons:

This book has serious side effects
There is no Daggny Taggart in the real world
After reading it you will be having hangover for at least a week, it might go beyond month
You wont find anything interesting after this

Legend

Atlas shrugged is one of the most classic novels ever written. The story is riveting and the characters whose life one would covet to live . The philosophy conveyed is simple: you live for yourself.
While the book presents an oversimplified world it does convey the message effectively and is likely to have an everlasting impact on the reader.
Style is immensely engaging and the book truly casts a spell.

Too simple a world has been presented, where all the bums and incompetent run the government and the best and ingenious ones are industrialists. US economy is falling apart and all the actions taken to prevent the same have only deteriorated the condition. Those who deserve have been robbed off all that was theirs for the betterment of the public, who are much negligent towards the gift.
John Galt, the perfect man fights for all his rights and steals all the genius and best ones away and world gives in. He builds a new world and decides to return to the original world only after the lights in new york go out.
He succeeds.
John is more like a god and therefore not that admirable, for its much more difficult to follow his ideals. Hank Rearden, another protagonist is much more lovable and admirable.

Read this book two years back and still remember every part of it.
As always quality of penguin books(signet is a project of penguin) is excellent.
It is a must read.

Fantastic !!

The title of the book eludes you until the 500 page mark. The book is a work of fiction but may have answers to certain problems that plague the world today. Ayn Rand argues that world needs "prime movers and how viciously it treats them" and to portray "what happens to a world without them". Prime Movers here are the businesses that help the society perform their day to day functions, they are referred to as the Atlas, a titan of greek mythology who holds the world on his shoulders. In other words, an organized "strike" against those who use the force of law and moral guilt to confiscate the accomplishments of society's productive members. Ayn also tries to explain the role of reason as man's basic tool of survival/ failure to apply it : rationality, honesty, justice, independence, integrity, productiveness, and pride.

The concept "sanction of the victim" is defined by Leonard Peikoff as "the willingness of the good to suffer at the hands of the evil, to accept the role of sacrificial victim for the 'sin' of creating values". Rand holds that evil is a parasite on the good and can only exist if the good tolerates it. Atlas Shrugged can be seen as an answer to the question of what would happen if this sanction were revoked. When Atlas shrugs, relieving himself of the burden of carrying the world, he is revoking his sanction. In the book Ellis Wyatt and Hank Rearden revoke their sanction of the victim and suddenly disappear which leaves the protagonist Dagny Taggart puzzled.

I had rate the book 4 out of 5.

Atlas Shrugged

Atlas Shrugged or rather Ayn Rand herself espouses philosophies that are well presented and awesome to read but call for an idealistic world for execution of the ideas so put forth.

I enjoyed reading almost all her works but I do not buy her philosophies. The characters are well fleshed and aspirational to say the least. Capitalism and the sole pursuit of wealth though sounds good when done ethically.

However, one point- Why capitalism, why not charity, why not compassion and acceptance of the fragility that most humans are built by.

However, one point- Why capitalism, why not charity, why not compassion and acceptance of the fragility that most humans are built by.

Humans are the only species on this planet that have to pay in order to buy their right to exist on the planet. That's sad! And promoting philosophies that add to it rather than critique it towards a better system is well, sad again!

The stars are for the story, characters, build up etc. etc. not the idea behind it. Recommended!

Only for broad minded! Not for prejudiced people!

It takes time to digest what Rand says, but it's a must read. It's not meant for narrow minded people though. To understand what she gotta say, one must leave all inhibitions and ideas behind (View complete review)

Top Notch

The book was delivered well packed before the estimated time. The Fountainhead comes across as a mere trailer to the full scale movie- Atlas Shrugged. A fine read. (View complete review)
