Aung San Suu Kyi: A Biography (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.1779

The leader of Burma?s democracy movement, Aung San Suu Kyi, has joined Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and the Dalai Lama in the global pantheon of those whose lives are dedicated to freedom. Throughout the world, she is associated with a peaceful struggle for democracy and human rights. But what is she really like? What drives her to make such enormous personal sacrifices for her country?
Jesper Bengtsson presents a portrait of one of today?s most significant political activists. He chronicles her background as the daughter of Burma?s liberation hero Aung San, the years she spent in England and New York, and her return to Burma in the 1980s. First placed under house arrest by the military junta in 1989, she spent fifteen of the subsequent twenty-one years in captivity, separated from her husband and two children.
Throughout that period, she remained a unifying figure and activist for Burma?s democracy movement. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, she saw her reputation and her international stature grow the longer she was under house arrest. Upon her release in November 2010, she immediately took up her work with the democracy movement and proved that she remains the most important political force in Burma.
Aung San Suu Kyi?s ability to affect people and repressive regimes reflects not only her personal charisma and courage but also her devotion to one of the great issues of our times: What is necessary for democracy to evolve from a deeply authoritarian system?

Feearless voice of Burma

First of all thanks for the great service to Flipkart.

Every time I read the autobiography or biography of a larger than life political character, individuals like Jinnah or Gandhi or Imran Khan or Sonia Gandhi, I look for clues or explanations as to why they are different from ordinary mortals. What makes these people tick? Why did Gandhi throw away his legal career in pursuit of political rights? Why did a secular Jinnah convert to the role of an Islamic guardian and seek to partition India? Why is Sonia Gandhi willing to stay in politics even after Rajiv Gandhi???s assassination, though...

Why is Sonia Gandhi willing to stay in politics even after Rajiv Gandhi???s assassination, though she had been dead set against Rajiv Gandhi entering politics? Why is Imran Khan, the erstwhile playboy, willing to put up with so many brickbats as he somehow manages to stay afloat in the murky waters of Pakistani politics? Is it because these individuals are visionary saints who are so concerned about public welfare that they will make sacrifice after sacrifice to implement their vision for the improvement of society or are they so egoistic that they are willing to put up with any number of brickbats in order to be in the limelight? Or is it a combination of both?
When I ordered this book, I never expected this book with a great writing style or anything like that. We cant expect a book written by a journalist more than this, I ordered this book only for the information and the book delivers. It gives a lot and lot of information on mafia, how it is started and how the members are involved. Jesper pours all his life-time investigation in this book and you will never get bored. He is the most seniour journalist who worked explicitly on Burman politics. However, its very difficult to maintain the grip with this type of book. Yeah, there are some low-points too.

At best - average.

Due to Suu Kyi's many years in house arrest, I think it is difficult to find well researched, personal-account-laced literature about her. This is one such book. The book has surprisingly many grammatical errors. Which is an indication of the pedestrian quality of proof reading and editing. It is neither a breezy read, nor informative/binding.
