Aung San Suu Kyi: A Biography is a book that narrates the life story of Burmese political activist and leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Summary Of The Book
Aung San Suu Kyi is the face of the Burmese people’s struggle to free themselves from the military regime that has been ruling their country for years. She hails from a distinguished family that has an extensive history of offering service to the country. Her father, Aung San, established the Burmese army and successfully negotiated with the British for Burma’s independence in 1947. Aung San was assassinated by political enemies.
Aung San Suu Kyi was educated in a Methodist School. She is a Theravada Buddhist, and while she was growing up she met people from various religious, social, and political backgrounds.
She pursued her graduation studies at Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi when her mother, Khin Kyi, was serving as the Burmese Ambassador for India. She later continued her studies at Hugh’s College, Oxford. She married Dr. Michael Aris, a Western authority on Tibetan and Burmese culture and Buddhism.
Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband visited Burma in 1988. Aung San Suu Kyi stayed back and became involved with the political movement. She became the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD). The party won the 1990 general elections, but the military dictatorship put Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest. Her husband, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, was not allowed to visit her.
She has continued her struggle against the Burmese military junta for years. This book chronicles the political and economic history of Burma and Aung San Suu Kyi’s life history.
The author has conducted a series of interviews with Aung San Suu Kyi in order to write this book. This was an effort to convey her message of social justice and political freedom for the Burmese people to the world.

First of all thanks for the great service to Flipkart.
Every time I read the autobiography or biography of a larger than life political character, individuals like Jinnah or Gandhi or Imran Khan or Sonia Gandhi, I look for clues or explanations as to why they are different from ordinary mortals. What makes these people tick? Why did Gandhi throw away his legal career in pursuit of political rights? Why did a secular Jinnah convert to the role of an Islamic guardian and seek to partition India? Why is Sonia Gandhi willing to stay in politics even after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, though she had been dead set against Rajiv Gandhi entering politics? Why is Imran Khan, the erstwhile playboy, willing to put up with so many brickbats as he somehow manages to stay afloat in the murky waters of Pakistani politics? Is it because these individuals are visionary saints who are so concerned about public welfare that they will make sacrifice after sacrifice to implement their vision for the improvement of society or are they so egoistic that they are willing to put up with any number of brickbats in order to be in the limelight? Or is it a combination of both?
When I ordered this book, I never expected this book with a great writing style or anything like that. We cant expect a book written by a journalist more than this, I ordered this book only for the information and the book delivers. It gives a lot and lot of information on mafia, how it is started and how the members are involved. Jesper pours all his life-time investigation in this book and you will never get bored. He is the most seniour journalist who worked explicitly on Burman politics. However, its very difficult to maintain the grip with this type of book. Yeah, there are some low-points too.
Due to Suu Kyi's many years in house arrest, I think it is difficult to find well researched, personal-account-laced literature about her. This is one such book. The book has surprisingly many grammatical errors. Which is an indication of the pedestrian quality of proof reading and editing. It is neither a breezy read, nor informative/binding.
