Ayn Rand (Set Of 2 Books) is a set of two titles, namely Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand.

Summary Of The Books

Ayn Rand (Set Of 2 Books) contains two of Ayn Rand’s fictional works titled Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead.

Atlas Shrugged, considered to be Rand’s magnum opus, is an extensive work that furthers her philosophy of Objectivism. Set in the United States, it presents a dystopian future where society’s brightest and most productive minds keep disappearing mysteriously, leaving the economy weak and vulnerable. The protagonist, Dagny Taggart, who runs a railroad company is intrigued and alarmed by these inexplicable occurrences.

As it turns out, the disappearing citizens are being led on a strike by a man named John Galt to protest against the dominance of the government and its denial of the rights of the individual. They wish to demonstrate that if individuals are enslaved by society and deprived of their rights to create, then civilization is certainly doomed.

The book was published in 1957 in the United States. It received both praise and criticism. Its popularity and sales increased consistently over the decades after its release. The book has been adapted for film and television.

The Fountainhead presents a dystopian future where the essence of the individual has been stamped out to make room for the establishment of the collective. The protagonist is Howard Roark, a young architect who refuses to compromise his individuality by succumbing to convention. Even in the face of certain obscurity and unswerving opposition, he chooses to practice a form of architecture that goes against every established tradition.

His choice of individuality over convention hurts him at every turn, even putting him on trial for supposed incompetence and fraud. But, his brand of independence and integrity, and a strong refusal to embrace the mediocre see him display the true spirit and supremacy of man.

Apart from Roark’s struggle against convention, his romance with Dominique Francon is also central to the plot. His complex relationships with the various characters in the book explore the author’s philosophy of Objectivism. The book was first published in May 1943. It received mixed reviews upon its release. It went on to bring Rand much commercial success and fame. The book has sold more than 6.5 million copies globally.

A film based on the novel was released in 1949.

Ayn Rand (Set Of 2 Books) was released in 2011 by Penguin Books India.

About Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand was a Russian–American novelist, screenwriter, playwright, and philosopher. She was also the the founder and developer of a complete philosophical system called Objectivism.

She wrote several pieces of fiction as well as non-fiction. Her literary works include Anthem, The Virtue Of Selfishness, The Fountainhead, We The Living, Philosophy: Who Needs It, and Atlas Shrugged.

Her writing furthered her philosophy of Objectivism. It garnered extremes of praise and criticism. Human achievement, reason, and egoism were the common themes in her writing.

Rand was born on February 2, 1905, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. She graduated as a History major from Petrograd State University. A trip to America to visit her relatives left her highly impressed and desirous of staying there permanently. She supported herself by taking up various jobs. She married actor Frank O’Connor in 1929. Rand passed away on March 6, 1982.

too small a size for comfortable reading

Fountain head and Atlast Shrugged are my all time favourite. But these books are too small and thick for a comfortable bed or travel read. The fonts too are very small hence straining on eyes.

Epic.

Finished Fountainhead. It took a long time, but it was worth it. It does become a little uninteresting at the start, but the story develops amazingly. I'm reading Atlas Shrugged now.
FK did the hard-work, delivered it safely and on time.

Great books!

I extremely loved both the books. Everyone should read them once. They may even change your life!

The print is a little small and the books tend to get tattered but they're still great for the price!

Book size is very small and font size is too small

I thought that the book would be minimum sized and font would be reasonable in size to read. But both are too small to read. I kept all the three books aside. Disappointed with flipkart. You should have mentioned the font size and all clearly!

Not satisfied with the combo deal!

I bought the same combo a few days back from flipkart but the font size is very small and it is difficult to read the books unless you want to strain your eyes.. I was so excited while purchasing the series but all my excitement vanished when I received the books :(

Print too small

Cautionary note: These paperback books, have very small print, also quality of the paper on which the book is printed is not good and so is a very difficult read.

Buy them only if you have the patience and do not care for the eye strain.Otherwise books come in a nice package and have additional notes from the author etc (being a special addition).

Should be on your "Books to read before I die" list

These two books are among the best contemporary books in philosophical fiction.

Be prepared for a whole new universe where standards of excellence are so high, that a Rand-ian protagonist may seem more unrealistic than Batman.

The Fountainhead introduces you to a (more believable) genius architect with principles which make him a rebel. The book takes you through his life as it becomes a struggle against the mediocrity and shallow contentment, to heights never seen before. Credit should be given to Rand for developing the antagonist as well as she develops her protagonist and also for gettin

Ayn Rand: a schizophrenic genius

She is the strongest woman I have read. Her writing is crisp and perfect. Her description of societal dysfunctioning will make you hate the world and make you see true potential of mankind. She is a libertarian, but unlike present day capitalists, which has become a socialism of the financial sector, her principles are sharp and lethal.

However awesome she was in her thought she had her failings. She was not able to live her own philosophies - from her failures in love to failures of her school of economics that has presently becoming the laughing stock of the world. Her embracing of female

Totally Worthless

these books were primarily written for the sole purpose of expressing her ideas, so you can expect all the extremities in the book. All her heros are wooden, sociopathic, emotionless and idealistic charecters who extoll her ideas and everyone else who has a different opinion is a bad guy.
As far her philosophy is concerned, i tend to agree with her on her ideas of individualism but i lose it all when she says "so be an asshole to everyone".
Another point about her philosphy is that she embraces full fledged capitalism as an ideal society, wheras such a society only leads to exploitation of the

Make sure it's your cup of tea!

The Fountainhead is probably the toughest work I have attempted to read. And I have to admit that after making it through three quarters of the book I had to give it up, and did not subsequently have the courage to tackle Atlas Shrugged. But I am not writing this to dissuade buyers but merely to warn them that this book is not for everyone and is defintely not casual reading.
Rand raises some important questions, and her ideal, which Howard Roark embodies, is very important even today. But in presenting her view of a perfect world and an objective we must all work towards, while presenting a

Self-sacrifice is not everything

Hi Reader,

If you are wondering whether or not you should buy this package then let me tell you that these two master pieces have engraved their permanent places in the history of Philosophy. I agree that this book will certainly give you a sense of selfishness but if you think deeply you'll arrive at point where it seems to be the perfect way to succeed in life. This book tells you how you can befit society by possessing the essential traits of selfishness. Go for it if you haven't read it ever.

My books of religion

I read both of these books much before Flipkart came into existence. This tidy set I gifted to a dear friend, who shares the philosophy propounded in the books.
Fountainhead is is a excellent book that depicts the journey of a man from his schooling to becoming a renowned architect. It revolves around how perfection is deplored and how pioneers and trend-breakers are persecuted.
Atlas Shrugged is even denser in plot, which depicts the life and challenges of three central male characters. The theme is similar to Fountainhead, but goes much deeper.
It's best to read these both oneself to get th
