Ayn Rand (Set Of 2 Books) is a set of two titles, namely Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand.
Summary Of The Books
Ayn Rand (Set Of 2 Books) contains two of Ayn Rand’s fictional works titled Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead.
Atlas Shrugged, considered to be Rand’s magnum opus, is an extensive work that furthers her philosophy of Objectivism. Set in the United States, it presents a dystopian future where society’s brightest and most productive minds keep disappearing mysteriously, leaving the economy weak and vulnerable. The protagonist, Dagny Taggart, who runs a railroad company is intrigued and alarmed by these inexplicable occurrences.
As it turns out, the disappearing citizens are being led on a strike by a man named John Galt to protest against the dominance of the government and its denial of the rights of the individual. They wish to demonstrate that if individuals are enslaved by society and deprived of their rights to create, then civilization is certainly doomed.
The book was published in 1957 in the United States. It received both praise and criticism. Its popularity and sales increased consistently over the decades after its release. The book has been adapted for film and television.
The Fountainhead presents a dystopian future where the essence of the individual has been stamped out to make room for the establishment of the collective. The protagonist is Howard Roark, a young architect who refuses to compromise his individuality by succumbing to convention. Even in the face of certain obscurity and unswerving opposition, he chooses to practice a form of architecture that goes against every established tradition.
His choice of individuality over convention hurts him at every turn, even putting him on trial for supposed incompetence and fraud. But, his brand of independence and integrity, and a strong refusal to embrace the mediocre see him display the true spirit and supremacy of man.
Apart from Roark’s struggle against convention, his romance with Dominique Francon is also central to the plot. His complex relationships with the various characters in the book explore the author’s philosophy of Objectivism. The book was first published in May 1943. It received mixed reviews upon its release. It went on to bring Rand much commercial success and fame. The book has sold more than 6.5 million copies globally.
A film based on the novel was released in 1949.
Ayn Rand (Set Of 2 Books) was released in 2011 by Penguin Books India.

the book is a wonderful creation of simple thoughts taking into complex social thoughts when more minds are involved , the one thing i really cant understand is why the prices of books vary , i wish these people cud provide a list of things that are going to shoot their prices up so we can shop well :) just an advice .
She is the strongest woman I have read. Her writing is crisp and perfect. Her description of societal dysfunctioning will make you hate the world and make you see true potential of mankind. She is a libertarian, but unlike present day capitalists, which has become a socialism of the financial sector, her principles are sharp and lethal.
However awesome she was in her thought she had her failings. She was not able to live her own philosophies - from her failures in love to failures of her school of economics that has presently becoming the laughing stock of the world. Her embracing of female submission and the glorification of rape has kept the mainstream afraid of her.
The two books are also a reflection of her success and failure. The Fauntainhead is about talent and career of individual greatness while Atlas Shrugged is about economic rebellion and capitalism. The former is a more realistic possibility while the later is pure madness and idiotic political propaganda. Her original message of individual greatness is wholly available in the first book and one can easily skip the second without wasting time on pointless lectures on capitalism.
If you are interested her books have also been made into movies. In 2010 atlas shrugged was released in the US.
These two books are among the best contemporary books in philosophical fiction.
Be prepared for a whole new universe where standards of excellence are so high, that a Rand-ian protagonist may seem more unrealistic than Batman.
The Fountainhead introduces you to a (more believable) genius architect with principles which make him a rebel. The book takes you through his life as it becomes a struggle against the mediocrity and shallow contentment, to heights never seen before. Credit should be given to Rand for developing the antagonist as well as she develops her protagonist and also for getting her architecture right (she worked in an architecture firm for about a year just so that she could write this book). All in all, a great book and the recommended Ayn Rand stater book (I'd recommend We The Living actually).
Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand's magnum opus. If you can make it till the end of this book, which also happens to be eighth longest book in western literature (Wiki it), you will either revere it or loathe it. Considered to be the second most influential book in the western world after the Bible, this book introduces you to ideas which will make you stop and ponder about things which you have never given thought about. Personally, this was one of the toughest book to begin. Around six tries later, this book really captured me. I'm not a voracious reader, but I was reading this book round the clock. I'm not sure how to end this review now, but all I can say is, read it!
These two books are the best of Ayn Rand. I read both these books before I brought them on flipkart. I just had to own these myself.
I would recommend reading Fountain Head first. And then Atlas Shrugged. These are very long books and it will take a significant amount of patience.
The key message (Objectivism) in both the books is the same. And I found it very repeatative at times. But the sheer power of the message is so strong, it strikes a chord.
It made me think about lots of crap present in our world today, and about things that really matter.
These are not just novels, its a philosophy in itself.
I would highly recommend these.
Besides, this is also a very good deal from flipkart. Even if you may find it boring, it is definitely worth a read. Try it. You will get something out of it.
I started the book(the fountain head) as soon as i received it, the book has an superb start, it gets you involved from the first page itself.
I finished of the book in a day and half and was amazed by the writing style of the author. I have read many books, but this was exceptional.
I have started with the second book(Atlas shrugged)and will be back soon with a review for second one too....
This is an amazing, amazing book of thought. Through the novel Rand illustrates her philosophy of Objectivism.
