Huggies Diapers - Keep Your Little One Soft and Comfortable

Huggies is one of the many brands that will come to your mind at the mention of the word diapers. But diapers have a long and interesting history. Various forms of diapers were used in ancient times. Babies were mostly wrapped with milkweed leaf, animal skins, moss, and linens etc,. In ancient Europe, linen was wrapped around a baby’s body and this linen would hold the waste. People in colder climates like in Alaska, Canada, and Siberia laced moss around the baby’s bottom and then covered it with sealskin. Native Americans in both North and South America used packed grass and rabbit skin instead of moss. But people in tropical climates let their babies be naked and anticipated their baby’s poop schedule. The very first cloth diapers were used during the reign of Queen Elizabeth in England in the late 1500s. But the term “diaper” did not originate until the late 1800s. The diaper was originally a term for a piece of cloth with small geometric patterns. Since the first baby diapers were made of this kind of cloth, they took the name diapers. The first mass-made cloth diapers in the US were produced by Maria Allen in the year 1887.

Washing diapers became quite common by the early 1900s. After they were used, the diapers were boiled, because the existence of germs and bacteria was well acknowledged. Interestingly the need for clean diapers led to the “diaper service” - a service that took off during the II World War. Fresh and clean diapers were bought directly to your door under this service as more mothers began working outside the home.

Rubber pants became common in the 1920s but until this time diapers were doubled and needed to be changed often due to leakage. When latex rubber was used, diapers started to become leak-proof. Later in the 1950s, rubber pants changed to plastic pants as plastic was cheaper than rubber. The first disposable diaper was developed in Sweden in the year 1942 and this was nothing more than an absorbent pad held firmly in place with a pair of rubber pants. These pads were made out of unbleached creped cellulose tissue as cotton was a war material that was quite difficult to source. After the first disposable diaper, many others were made out of non-woven fabric and knitted mesh. In 1950, disposable cellulose wadding inside of a knitted mesh came in a long roll which was cut by parents to fit their baby. During this period, disposable diapers were a luxury item as they were only used during special occasions like flying, seeing a show, or a road trip. Though these diapers held very little moisture and were not secure, they were considered a great invention back then.

Pampers was introduced to the market in the year 1961 by Vic Mills, an employee of Procter and Gamble. Pampers was originally made out of cellulose fibres to make the diapers more absorbent. Huggies diapers came into the market in the year 1960s and brought design improvements with it. Huggies diapers were more absorbent, shaped better for a snug fit, had elastic in the legs, waist and were made with biodegradable materials. Slowly, Huggies started introducing germ protection, skin conditioner, wetness indicators and other useful improvements in their products.
