Batatychi Chal is the humorous story of a fictitious ‘chal’ or tenement in Girgaon, South Mumbai, and the lower middle class families inhabiting it.

Batatychi Chal, a story written by Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, is set in India during the 1940s.
The story focuses on the inhabitants of a tenement called Batatyachi Chal in Girgaon, which is a locality in the city of Mumbai. The families living there belong to the lower middle class, and the residents include music teachers, school teachers, clerks, and the likes. The humorous and poignant narrative laments the decline of this class of people.
A cultural movement, a musical show, songs for women, and some pages from the diaries of the residents are some interesting elements from the book, and Dwarakanath Gupte, Baba Barve, Kochrekar, Kashinath Nadkarni, Janoba Rege, Sammel Kaka, Kushabhau Akshikar, and Raghunana Soman are some of the main characters from Batatychi Chal.
About Purushottam Laxman Deshpande
Purushottam Laxman Deshpande was a Marathi author from Maharashtra, India. He was also a skilled orator, singer, film actor, theatre actor, and music composer.
He authored numerous works in Marathi, including novels, humorous books and essays, travelogues, and plays. Some of his works include Teen Paishancha Tamasha, Gandhiji, Sundar Mi Honar, Tuka Mhane Ata, Vyakti Ani Valli, Khilli, Nawe Gokul, Asa Mi Asami, Golaberij, Kay Wattel Te Hoeel, Mumbaikar, Punekar Ka Nagpurkar?, Pudhari Pahije, and Ek Shunya Mee.
Deshpande’s writing was extremely witty and humorous. He was known for having an eye for detail and a succinct way with words. His writing was deeply rooted in the Marathi language. He also translated several books from other languages to Marathi.
Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, popularly known as Pu. La. Deshpande, was born on November 8, 1919, in Mumbai, India. His family eventually moved to Pune. He pursued his academic interests at Fergusson College, Pune, and Willingdon College, Sangli. Before the start of his well-rounded career in writing, acting, direction, and music, he worked as a college professor in Belgaum, in Northern Karnataka. Deshpande also played the harmonium, and was an accomplished singer. He composed music for several Marathi films. He won numerous awards, including the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. Deshpande succumbed to Parkinson’s disease at the age of 80 in Pune, in the year 2000.

World class humor..
Pu La is the most versatile personality I know so far. I mean, one can not be top Scientific writer, top musician, top screenplay writer, director, actor, singer, comic writer, play writer etc. etc. AND a visionary at the same time, like he was. And to understand his work given that he excelled at so many fields, one must has achieved a certain level of understanding.
Batatyachi Chal is a must read for people who understand Pu La. In fact, if one knows Pu La, then he/she has read this book is an implication. This book is about classic lifestyle in "Chal". His homour always has a thin lining of sarcasm and criticism at the times. Pure fun and whole new perspective is a guaranteed gift one CAN get after understanding the work of this visionary.

Go for it!
This is my second purchase from flipkart.
1) About flipkart:
i) I placed an order on 17th October 2012 and got it delivered on 22nd October 2012. So it was delivered on 5th working day. A bit late.
ii) Book was in excellent condition. Nicely laminated in very thin plastic to keep it safe and then wrapped in thick cardboard paper. Also bookmark was given with it for free. So that was nice!
2) About the book:
Paper quality was good. Print quality was nice. Loved it.
** I bought it as a Birth Day gift for my friend and I got a Happy Birth Day bookmark with it! It was such a sweet shock for me to see it! I bet my friend will be happy to see it too! Thanks flipkart. **

gud collection
Recently I gifted my mother this book.
She has an amazing collection for books,Specillu written by Pu.La.Deshpande.
Also the price of the book is less then that available in book shops.
The book was delivered early,as my mother had to leave for Pune.
She thoroughly enjoys reading this book and has askes me to order more book for her.

There was lesson from this book in School Syllabus
There was lesson from this book in School Syllabus,
I dont remember in which standard, There was another lesson antu barva in marathi syllabus,again by PL Deshapande,It was amazing , Since then i was thinking to read full books what they had inlcuded in our school syllabus short stories as lessons small part of books
there it is all books are available on flipkart

Unparelled literature
PL is the best writer produced by maharashtra. As he had no children his genius was not carried on to the next generation ,what a tradedy. Do not miss this masterpiece.His work should translated in hindi and english.
