Book Summary of Beautiful Thing: Inside The Secret World Of Bombay's Dance Bars

Sonia Faleiro was a reporter in search of a story when she met Leela, a beautiful and charismatic bar dancer with a story to tell.

Leela introduced Sonia to the underworld of Bombay's dance bars: a world of glamorous women, of fierce love, sex and violence, of customers and gangsters, of police, prostitutes and pimps.

When an ambitious politician cashed in on a tide of false morality and had Bombay's dance bars wiped out, Leela's proud independence faced its greatest test. In a city where almost everyone is certain that someone, somewhere, is worse off than them, she fights to survive, and to win.

Beautiful Thing, one of the most original works of non-fiction from India in years, is a vivid and intimate portrait of one reporter's journey into the dark, pulsating and ultimately damaged soul of Bombay.

speechless

I heard her at Jaipur Lit Fest and decided to read this book as she nerrated few paragraphs. She is capable of giving one sleepless nights as I experienced while going through the book - the human tragedy and the black humour yet an eye for sensitive details and mind with neutrality. She did share a bondage with Leela and its fascinating that how people behave - while Leela was all for extracting money from her "Kostomers" yet she refused to accept it from Sonia when she really needed it .... a fasinating, sad, painful, sharp story that leaves you in a state of your own helplessness against unilateral political decisions and against the state of these women...

Gritty, matter-of-fact, 'documentary'-like

Ms Faleiro's book is a good read, though sometimes a bit hard - it sometimes leaves a sour taste in your mouth, the way the women are treated by the people in their lives, including their own parents.
But it's a quick read, and Faleiro does not pass judgement on anyone, so it's up to you to make up your mind about the whole situation.

I've lived in Bombay for the better part of my life, and this book is utterly believable.

Decent Read

The book is written well but to be very honest, I expected a lot more out of it. It did not enthrall me the way i expected it to. I expected more considering the reviews it got.
The book is well researched and the author has captured the essence of the 'life' of a bar dancer.
