Fast moving - action packed thriller. Learning to program in Linux is an important ritual in a programmer's career and Niel & Richard certainly make transitioning through that ritual a bit easier.

The book, as one would expect, moves from easier topics to more difficult ones. The authors start with a gentle introduction to Linux and the GNU project and then move on to shell scripts, but it is not covered in detail. Then starting with files, they begin to unravel the API of Linux Kernel discussing some of the more relevant topics like signals, IPC, Sockets, GUI. Surprisingly, they offer GUI on both - GNOME (GTK) and KDE (QT).

The coverage, as mentioned, is fast, balanced and manages to retain your concentration over extended periods of time. Code examples are plenty. In fact, the authors, as a theme through out the book, start with a simple CD catalogue application and improve/extend it at the end of it each chapter with the new knowledge thus gained.

The authors also include discussions on various tools in the GNU Toolchain, which again is pretty helpful for beginners.

PITFALLS TO AVOID:
1. Though there is an introductory chapter on it, this book is not about shell scripting. If you wish to specifically learn shell scripting. I would suggest referring to the work of Stephan Kochan on that topic.

2. It is beginner book and does not dwell too deep into specific topics, rather the aim is to introduce to a wide range of topics in Linux programming.

3. This is not a reference on the Kernel API.
