BHADRAMBHADRA (Paperback) Price: Rs. 100

A humorous account about the rigidity, hypocrisy, and pettiness of the Hindu anti-reformists, Ramanbhai Nilkanth’s Bhadrambhadra is a satire worth reading.

Summary Of The Book

Ramanbhai Nilkanth’s Bhadrambhadra is a novel that deals largely with the reform movements of the 19th century within the Hindu caste system.

The novel begins with the protagonist of the story, Daulatshankar, changing his name to Bhadrambhadra because the word Daulat sounds very non-Sanskrit. The idiosyncratic behavior of the protagonist is how the author generates humor within the story.

The author also uses a Sanskrit-based Gujarati language in order to emphasize Bhadrambhadra’s incomprehensibility to the others in society. Due to his complex mannerisms and behavior, he is misunderstood and ridiculed by people at large.

During its publication in 1900, Bhadrambhadra was well-read and accepted within the Gujarati community.

Its a story cum documentary of the social condition of Gujarati social system of the time. Very light comic sequence of scenes make you laugh a lot on each conversation. One of the best book for your collection.
