Bhagavad Gita: A Sanskrit Philosophical Poem

The Bhagavad Gita, the song of the Divine One, is revered as a sacred text of Hindu philosophy. It is perhaps the most well- Known and certainly the most widely-read ethical text of ancient India.

An episode in the great wpic, the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Krishan ans Arjuna, which tkes place on the battlefield of kurukshetra. Just before the start of the war, the pandava prince Arjuna is filled with doubt, realizing that his enemies are his own relatives, beloved friends and revered teachers. The conversation that follows summarises a number of different yogic and vedantic philosophies, explaining the meaning and purpose of life and existence. It is during this conversation, that Krishna finally proclaims that he is God Himself.

The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most popular texts in the world, demonstrated by the fact that, next to the Bible, it is perhaps the most widely translated of all scriptural texts; its relevance is independent of a person’s religious or ethnic background.
