Master Dinanth is a freedom fighter and led the war against the British in 1942 and eventually won the independence in 1947. But after independence, the people's love for their country seems to be diminishing and they are too busy betraying it like rich businessman Thakur Pratab Singh. Masterji finds out about Thakur Pratab Singh's illegal activities such as smuggling of weapons and ammunition and gets him arrested. In revenge for putting him in prison, Pratab Singh gets Masterji's wife Bharati and daughter Priti kidnapped by Thakur's partner in crime Sher Singh to try and change his ways but to no avail. Thakur also provokes an attack on Masterji's home by the local villagers who accuse Dinanath of betraying his country and he is forced to flee his home with his young son Raju. His wife becomes a victim of leprosy and escapes from Sher Singh leaving her daughter Priti in a friend's care.
Virendra Pratap Singh lives a wealthy, yet careless lifestyle in India. When his father passes away, he hopes to inherit the entire estate and wealth, but is unable to do so due to a stipulation in the will that he must join a military academy as per family traditions, and failure to do so may forfeit his claim to this inheritance. He reluctantly joins the National Defence Academy, expects to break every possible rule, and be discharged. His training officer is Major Jasbir Singh Rana, who takes it upon himself not to discharge Virendra under any circumstance, even when Virendra runs away twice. Then Virendra's plans change when he meets with and falls in love with Nisha, who lives a very wealthy lifestyle with her gangster brother, Shankar. Virendra decides to continue training so that he can be close to Nisha, however, Shankar has other plans for Nisha as he wants to get wed to fellow-gangster.

The plot revolves around Rajnikanth's attempts to take revenge on the killers of his parents while his elder sister Hema Malini, who is a police officer, tries to catch him in the act. Amitabh Bachchan who himself has a past with the law, is an ally of Rajnikanth in his effort.
