BIRDS OF THE IND.SUBCONTINENT 2 REV. ED. (English) 2nd Edition (Paperback) Price: Rs.748

Birds Of The Indian Subcontinent, written by Richard Grimmett, Carol Inskipp, and Tim Inskipp, is an essential guidebook for every ornithologist and bird lover.

Summary Of The Book

Birds Of The Indian Subcontinent is the latest version of the field guide that was published in 1998, in the same name. This newest edition covers nearly all species of birds that can be found in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Maldives, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.

This second edition of the book contains special features such as fully upgraded colour maps of the entire bird species, coverage of all the bird species in the Indian subcontinent, and a portable volume which concisely highlights key characteristics of each bird from the region.

Birds Of The Indian Subcontinent has information on more than 1300 species of birds. Some of the species of birds in the book are Locustella naevia, Otus thilohoffmanni, Pallas’ grasshopper warbler, S. whistleri, and Seicercus burkii.

The authors have included 214 colour plates for quick visual reference. The plates are accompanied by maps and descriptions of each bird species. The plates are placed such that they face maps and text for quick reference. Newer plates have been added to the second edition and many of the older plates from the previous edition have been repainted. For bird species that are difficult to observe such as the warbler, rose finch, and nightjar, the authors have included detailed tables which summarise specific identification characteristics.

Birds Of The Indian Subcontinent was published in 2011.

Very good

This book is the second edition of the "Pocket Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent" and not the old handbook. Very nicely compiled and improved over the earlier edition. Major and useful improvements being, the text and distribution maps are placed opposite to the plates & the maps have been revised. It is almost a combo of the leading field guides for the subcontinent.
There are 226 plates. Most families are put on many plates with not more than 6-7 species on a single plate owing to big and good illustrations with actual names and not numbers below every species. F...

There are 226 plates. Most families are put on many plates with not more than 6-7 species on a single plate owing to big and good illustrations with actual names and not numbers below every species. For confusing families, there are certain plumage types are illustrated too. eg. fresh or worn plumage in Warblers. The text has been increased, compiled nicely, is concise and contains ID characters making it simple for beginners. It also mentions voice which is not so useful or accurate with difficult species but will be helpful. Authors have tried to follow recent changes in taxonomy and have listed proposed future splits also. The book covers around 1375 species, including a few pages dedicated to vagrants. Overall it is a good buy.
Service at flipkart is just great as always. Very good discount on the book and got it delivered very next day in Mumbai.
Amateur birdwatchers who plan to spend on a field guide this is currently the best buy at a reasonable price.

Definitive Buy for Birders!

For amateur birders, the new handbook edition of Grimmett, Inskipp and Inskipp is going to be a definitive companion to identifying birds in the field. Weighing slightly more than its predecessor, two things that make the tome a winner among the current crop of field guides to Indian birds is the replacement of the somber grey backgrounds with white backgrounds on the plates, bringing the identifying characteristics of the birds to the fore, and well, making the illustrations quite a feast for the eyes, which were previously lost in the monsoon grey plates. One doesn't have to fumble anymore to look at species' ranges across the country as the maps are positioned in the page opposite to the plates, with key identifying characteristics of each species including brief taxonomic notes on their former classification before Pamela Rassmussen's work changed it all.

The vagrants are neatly placed in an appendix with juxtaposed illustrations of the species.

The swallows plate seems slightly pixellated but the identifying characteristics are clear enough.

Another change over the first edition is the deletion of the signature scrawls of the artists from the bottom of the plates they illustrated and having clubbed their names on the front page along with the authors' names. Slightly unfortunate, this. Cause the signatures put a nice feeling of association with the respective artists.

That said, a neat little key to the plates generated and pasted on the backflap should make make this a gem for all birding trips. Happy Birding!

Birds of the Indian Subcontinent

After purchasing a few similar books on this topic, I found this to be the most comprehensive- All 1295 Birds and all plates are in color. Well categorized and laid out. Its better than the others because of its evenly spread plates, and the trick being you can flip thru pages to stop at a page on which color, size or shape resembles what you have seen. From Ducks to owls this book as been a pleasure to kid and adults. It also makes a wonderful gift and more so to visitors to the subcontinent with an interest in ornithology.

Good reference guide but can be improved!

The new revised edition of the book has the bird location maps along with description and illustrations to the right hand side. The book is quite comprehensive and lists all the birds of indian subcontinent. the illustrations are clear and help in identifying females, males and juveniles quite easily. This is very useful for identify birds. However, what I felt missing was a ready reckoner /cheat sheet where we can identify birds readily with bill shape, bird colour, prominent crest, or size of body. This type of reference is found in Salim Ali's books. Since there are 1300 odd birds, it is... ()

This is very useful for identify birds. However, what I felt missing was a ready reckoner /cheat sheet where we can identify birds readily with bill shape, bird colour, prominent crest, or size of body. This type of reference is found in Salim Ali's books. Since there are 1300 odd birds, it is quite difficult to flip through the book to identify the bird and lack of this feature limits the use of this book as a field guide. Some of the birds I saw which were located near my hometown in Tamilnadu were listed as rare sightings but my discussions with other birders in my area confirmed that these birds were quite common in our area. the maps therefore, needs updating.

A must for beginners

Quite the Bible for amateurs. Perhaps, not so much for enthusiasts who would indulge in something more detailed.
Fits snugly in a backpack but quite the burden if you must lug it aroung in your hands while straining your neck to locate your feathered friend.

Great book for beginers

I purchased this book as I have recently developed an interest in bird watching. It is a very good book for beginners. As mentioned in some of the previous comments, the birds in white sometimes merge into the background, and make few of the features hard to identify.

Although the general speci...
