Over hyped BB

There is no denial in the fact that BB phones have been selling as pieces of hot cakes due to the cult brand status of BB in india but the consumer has to understand the purpose of their buy. Most buyers buy due to so called easier communication due to the Blackberry Messenger which cost Rs. 300 without internet and Rs. 400 with internet in which the buyer limits his communication profile only to the blackberry users on the other hand an android user may download a popular messenger like "whatsapp" or "yahoo messenger" which could run on a monthly GPRS internet recharge of Rs 98 (2GB upload/download) in which the communication proflie is not only extended to Android user but also the users on PC, apple's iOS, Blackberry, etc. as these apps are availabe for all OSs. Morever the Application database for BB is very limited and most of the Apps are paid. The only reason why BB was so popular amongst the Corporates was because of the secured encrypted E-mail service previously offered BB which also has now been lost due to the govt. The web browsing experience is so much easier in cases of any android phones like Samsung Pop/ galaxy II which have been competitively priced under Rs 10k. So there is really no specific reason to opt for a blackberry apart from the qwerty keypad feature.

Amazing Blackberry mobile phone at this price , blackberry rocks

Hey frnds,
I bought this phone from Flipkart, got it in just 2 days.
Presently I am using it and the best feature of this phone is the voice quality. The push mail service is awesome.
The track pad is quite smooth , don't know about the other blackberry phones but like it. I got little pain in getting synched with my earlier phone but after some surfing I got it fixed by synching it using gmail account.
Didnt used the app world because of the shitty services of Airtel.

Sound Quality: The sound is good, much louder than all other phones I used till now.

Camera: its ok and does its job well.

Querty Keypad: yeah the Querty keyword helps a lot in messaging and using the BBM services to its fullest. Initially you get some problem as the keys are quite small but when u get use to it, you enjoy it.

BBM (black berry messenger): One of the best timepass on this phone apart from the poker game. You can share any pic and gossip very easily. It even shows if the other person has read you msg or yet not received it. So u can keep a check if he or she is ignoring you.

Alarm: Its not loud ...very loud.

Problems: You cant add a number directly from the call logs to an existing contact. You have to copy the number, go to the contacts and then edit the contact, AND then paste it. huh

Overhyped phone

I just migrated to this cult phone after getting bored from Nokia N72 which in all terms was excellent in terms of battery life, connectivity and applications. Infact there are lots of java as well as symbian support with that phone. Alas, the new phone is just hyped to what mercedes is to cars.
There are very little applications available, and most of them are paid ones. Unlike the phone suite which came with nokia, i could not use the BB desktop application to write memos , chats or sms. All i can do is back up and synchronize the data. There are no in built facebook, gmail or orkut support, but the plugin has to be downloaded. Again the GPRS can not be customized like the earlier one, but one has to rely on the BB services to be availed from the phone company at a premium.

The only things are the good looks, high security, fast processor and cult of its own and disappointment of spending a large money to buy and use this phone.

Practicality of a blackberry

If you don't own a blackberry already, and are in the market for buying a new smartphone, you generally start out by comparing its specs with android phones in the same range to check for the wide range of apps that you can run.
But people, then you are missing out on what a phone should be for.
Its not a PlayStation portable or a media center or a replacement for your girlfriend/boyfriend using some of those cheesy apps.

Its a communication device,period.

I am assuming that atleast 99% of the people buying a smartphone in India are well off and at least have access to a computer at home.
So why do they need to watch a movie on a phone!
The current market trend ensures that people go for the smart-phones with the highest end specs to run Google's now bloated android 4.0
The quad core phones with dedicated graphic processing units
and a large touchscreen, are useful only to play games or watch movies. Its cumbersome to carry a big phone in your pocket in any case.
Admit it, however comfortable you are typing on a touchscreen, you would rather enjoy having a keyboard which can give that tactile feedback to your fingers.
Blackberrys have the best qwerty keyboards in the market.
When you hold one in your hands, it feels like a solid device with rugged build, not a fragile toy. It has an unified inbox for calls, sms, bbm, email, social alerts etc, which makes it feel more of a communication device than anything else.
Everything in the menus, make you feel that its a no nonsense workhorse. No fancy stuff, no cute apps, yet all the important ones are preinstalled.
And morever, you dont pay data rates when using a blackberry. The BIS plans are mostly unlimited with a fixed monthly charge. So you need not worry about some apps draining out your battery and data plans.

Nokia E5 offers much more at the same price

I am using BlackBerry Curve 8520 and Nokia E5 and I find E5 a better phone. GPS in Nokia E5 works great and has many times helped me to find the way but BB 8520 does not have GPS. In Nokia E5 you can edit word documents and rename the documents and create new word files. In E5 pdf files can be viewed clearly. In BB 8520 you can not create new word documents. pdf files can be viewed but the quality of the view is very poor. It's inbuilt memory is too small. The worst part is the availability of themes and applications. Nothing seems to be free and there's a price tag attached to most of the useful applications and interesting themes and the only from of online transaction accepted is through Credit Card. Further, the body has a distinct plastic feel and other than the logo there's not much difference in looks and feel between the BB 8520 and a cheap qwerty Micromax phone. Battery life is also not very promising. If you are not obsessed about the BB brand name and if you prefer utility more than showing off, then go for Nokia E5 and you will get much more than what BB 8520 has to offer for almost the same price. My verdict - do not go for this phone if you do not want to waste your money on a phone that should cost not more than Rs 5000/-. BB 8520 is over prized and not worth its cost. If you have Rs 10000 and if you want to buy a good phone then buy Nokia E5 and not Blackberry.

Awesome refreshing experience!!

First let me tell you that this is not just another phone in the market. This is a Blackberry that brings with it style and status quotient. Curve 8520 is an entry-level BB phone with almost all features that can be found in top-level BB. It is worth every penny of its cost!!

1. Super cool looks. Very professional.
2. QWERTY keypad. Very useful for typing msgs, emails and of course BBM.
3. Commonly used Apps are free and good.
4. Push-mail. You can configure personal and corporate emails and you will get an alert on arrival of new mail.
5. BBM. Great communicator between BB users.
6. Voice quality is very good and loud.

1. Cant use GPRS/EDGE for internet. With every BB phone, you have to purchase monthly BB Data Plans from service provider. Plans are available for BBM, BBM + emails, BBM + emails + Internet. If you want to setup corporate email services, there is another expensive plan. You can easily use Wi-Fi for accessing Internet, though.
2. No 3G. But hardly matters as BB Data services are quite fast.
3. Syncing contacts from other phones is difficult but can be done using free file-format converters.

So keep your requirements in mind before you buy. If you are ready to shell out for BB plans (as compared to cheap GPRS/EDGE plans on other phones), then this phone is for YOU!!

Unbiased Review - DO NOT BUY.

I know it can be disorienting to have extraordinary and terrible reviews slapped in your face one after the other. But it is always better to see if negative reviews outweigh positives, and in the case of BB Curve 8520 - that is exactly the scenario.

Note: I bought a BB Curve in June 2011 and writing this nearly 2 years later. Don't go by that. I vividly remember experiencing the first of many glitches within less than a month.

Let me guide you as to why you should not buy a blackberry.

If you're getting the entry model BB, it is highly likely that your reason to buy is BBM - the famous fart BlackBerry Messenger.
NO doubt, BBM is highly addictive. But only once you start using it. Don't use it and you survive perfectly well with Whatsapp, Gtalk, even good ol' text messages.

A common misconception is that BBM comes *with* the BlackBerry. Yes, the application does. The service doesn't. All network providers require you spending at least Rs. 500 a month on BBM service. Let's face it: IT'S A WASTE.

Either way, it's 2013. People who made the mistake of buying BBs a year back now realize it was a passing fad and that Blackberrys (unless it's an EXTREMELY fancy model) are mocked and considered a load of crap.

The camera is a joke. Paying 9K for a smartphone, you would expect a decent camera quality, if not bad. But Curve 8520 fails to deliver. The pictures turn out dark, grainy, pixelated, shadowed - basically everything else than what a picture should be. All this under reasonable light. Step outside in peak sunlight and you might get lucky with 1 or 2 OK shots - nothing extraordinary.

But that should be fine by BB standards, I guess. 2 OK pictures. Once in a while. Under harsh sunlight. For 9K. Ouch.

The battery is a BIGGER joke.

You've probably heard a lot of people whining about this. Incase you haven't, here it is : THE BATTERY FREAKING SUCKS! Not even exaggerating.

Primary reason - the BBM service. But that's no excuse. The company needs to PROVIDE BATTERIES that SUPPORT THEIR TRADEMARK APPS. In the case of BB and BBM - It fails majorly.

The phone lasts for about 7 hours - with 40 minutes of everything included - texting, whatsapp, calling, etc. Why? Because BBM runs in the background and hogs up all the battery, even if you are not using the app per se. And the worst part - you can't shut down the BBM app or turn off the BBM connectivity.

Month 1 after buying blackberry, I started experiencing minor lags, WITHOUT any significant applications downloaded. Why? I have no clue.

Come later months and the lags increase - both in duration and frequency. The phone would hang - mid message, mid BBM , mid ANYTHING. There have been numerous instances where I wasn't even able to answer phonecalls. The lags are horrendous and they last from anything between 10 seconds to Forever, and usually require taking out the battery and re-booting. (which can take upto 20 minutes)

Post month 6 I started experiencing crashes ; sparse - at first, once every week - later.

As I read somewhere earlier on the site, this phone is like a plastic toy. Drop it on accident once, it'll survive with a few scars or bumps. Drop it more than once, the plastic/rubber side panels will slowly start to fall - leaving your phone looking like an ugly duckling.

In the rare case that you almost never drop your phone, the side/back panels will anyway weather off due to usage. The rubber edges will start to disappear, button flaps will fall off, etc. Yes. THE BODY MELTS AWAY WITH USE.

This is my favorite, perhaps the funniest BB glitch. I call it 'ghost lights'.
The backlight of the phone is freaking random. It randomly gets brighter and duller, without the user touching the keypad. It won't affect the functioning but might leave you shocked and creeped out at first. Eventually you'll just get used to it.

THE VERDICT: It is GREAT for a user who prefers changing phones once every 6 months. But for someone looking for more reliable, about 2 years good functioning - this is a TERRIBLE CHOICE.

Hope this shatters all your myths about buying a BlackBerry Curve 8520.

Cheers! :)

My first (Sort of) Smart phone

I have got my blackberry curve 8520 for over a year now, and i thought will talk about just advantages and some problems this phone has given me.

On the plus side first.
1. Extremely great placement of keys
2. Touch pad is the best in the industry
3. Blackberry menu and navigation is extremely easy and well laid out
4. Good reception and sound.
5. The email function look feel and ease of type is unmatched.
6. I am a rough user and the phone has dropped a large number of times, with no problem except a few scratches.

Now some on cons of the phone.
1. Battery life is sad, but now almost all smart phones have that problem
2. The rubber covering gave way and i had to change it in about 7-8 months.(replacement cost 400) but i think its covered in the warranty, but still please verify.
3. It cant upgrade more than version 5
4. No 3G
5. At the time of review you may get better phones for the same price.

For me the phone is a good companion, i am not very phone savvy so, Email, occasional net browse, Watsapp, text are most of my uses so this is the perfect phone for my purposes.

About Blackberry and other phone vendors.

I have been using Blackberry Curve for over two years now and its truly a cult smartphone. Its a common mindset of us that my phone should have all the features, one should question themselves before buying any phone for that matter, what purpose should it exactly serve. Paying big bucks for high end phones, features of which most of us are not even completely aware of, is certainly not SMART. every phone provides us with some basic functionality, that is calling, sms, good phonebook memory and personal media like songs videos n all, which has become an inevitable neccessity these days. Blackberry, Iphone, Andriod and many more brands of which we have might have not even heard of, offer services and features beyond these basic necessities. Many of us complaint that this app is not present, camera is not good, sound is not up to the mark, ask yourself are you going to live your life search for that app, snapping around pics and listening to music. Build a necessity before buying any cellphone.

well i personally bought it for just showing off purpose...coz a bb is not that useful anyways...positive aspects of the phone are that it has a very nice camera...comparing your nokia, samsung 2MP cameras and a BB 2MP camera...BB was thumbs up, speakers are pretty impressive(very loud), internet surfing is quite fast provided on a wifi network.
Negative aspects include: no 3G(although it is an older model what can we expect), nd u need to have BIS(blackberry internet services) for IM and mail services and also BB App world which costs around Rs.399 on most networks or u need a wifi can use your mobile data or GPRS network that is the Rs.98 one only for basic browsing and cannot enjoy Instant messaging with the GPRS..not even whats app....
So buy it only if u r a fan of blackberry or something otherwise opt for symbian or windows phone or best android
