The BlackBerry PlayBook from Research In Motion (RIM) is a sleek looking device that packs in powerful features with a new operating system. The initially enterprise focused tablet from RIM has gone on to ensnare the consumer market too. This touch-based tablet runs on the QNX OS 2.0,, which is the first microkernel based end-to-end real time operating system, prepared to give smooth multi-tasking experience.

The PlayBook is powered by a Cortex A9 Dual Core processor with PowerVR SGX540 graphics and 1 GB RAM that complement the operating system and give you PC like experience in a smaller form factor. The PlayBook sports a 7-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen that has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The high resolution screen also has 4-finger multi-touch and gesture support features.

A 5 megapixel camera is loaded at the back of the PlayBook that can record Full HD 1080p videos in MPEG format. There is also a 3 megapixel front-facing camera that allows video chatting. The user interface of this RIM device is noteworthy as it combines features from webOS and iOS.

RIM has designed the PlayBook in a form factor that is easy to carry around. The device has a metal chassis with rounded edges that renders it a sophisticated look. On the top edge is the power button of the tablet, along with the volume rocker and play/pause button. If you don't prefer the power button, you can also start the PlayBook with a simple swipe-to-wake gesture touch.

The 425 g weighing BlackBerry tablet has dimensions of 130 x 194 x 10 mm. The two stereo speakers are neatly placed alongside the screen bezel, that give superior audio output. The Ambient Light Sensor present in the PlayBook is responsible for auto-adjusting the brightness of the 7-inch screen. Other sensors loaded into the tablet device include accelerometer, gyroscope and digital compass. The latter, along with GPS helps you navigate your way to any destination.

Storage and Memory

The BlackBerry PlayBook uses a standard 5300 mAh Li-Po battery, which, once fully charged, lets you go unplugged for up to 7 hours. The PlayBook does not have a microSD memory card slot. You can get 16 GB of internal storage space to meet your requirements.

Connectivity and Features

The Bluetooth connectivity in the PlayBook lets you pair a keyboard and mouse to it for ease of use. Other connectivity options include a micro HDMI port, a micro USB port, a charger connector and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The unique feature of the HDMI output is that it can show separate contents on the tablet and the TV to which it is connected. This means you can run a video on the TV while surfing the net on your tablet at the same time.

You can surf the Internet on the PlayBook through Wi-Fi on a Webkit browser. Apart from this, there are various useful features present in this tablet device that make it a must-have gadget. The RIM tablet has the copy and paste feature and packs in Word, Sheet, and Slideshow to Go from DataVis. The browser comes integrated with the Adobe Flash 11.2 and built-in support for HTML 5 giving an enhanced Web experience. Also present is a customized version of the Adobe Reader.

The Document To Go application lets you view PPT, DOC and XLS files. You can also create DOC and XLS files right on the tablet. Connecting to a BlackBerry smartphone via the BlackBerry Bridge allows you to access corporate emails, calendar, address book, task list in real time. Other business features of the PlayBook include corporate intranet browsing and enterprise VPN.

Absolute Bang for the Buck!

After having read up a lot on the playbook, I decided to take the plunge and pick it up during the offer period.

First bit of advice to anyone considering the Playbook, please do your own research, based on your requirements.

The Playbook is a brilliant device as an overall package. The biggest drawback is the lack of apps and the fact that the future of the device is uncertain. Having said that, OS 2.0 (Which has been reported to be made available in February) will support most Android apps. This should completely take care of the apps 'situation'.

If you do not have a Blackberry phone, you are limited by its utility. But with the Bridge it is an absolute joy to use! The size is just perfect! The software is very responsive and the Multi-tasking is a God-send!

Games run without lag and overall, the one week that I've had it, It never has hung. Accelerometer is sensitive and picks up even the slightest movements.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned that it can be mounted as a network drive - This meas that as long as the Playbook is on the same wifi network, it can be accessed by any other PC/Mac on that network for file transfer purposes. It is also said to support printing to network printers (I haven't checked this out).

Another big selling point is the inbuilt GPS, (The ipad doesn't have one!) Works perfectly with Bing Maps!!!

It is a fingerprint magnet though, but the cleaning cloth provided with the unit takes care of that.

Another major negative is that there is no Skype app. There is a workaround though, but video calls are not supported with this option.

Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase and would recommend that you check it out - based on your requirements.

Though I'm a Apple fanboy

I'm a gadget guy and I'm a Apple fanboy from the days of iPod classic and have owned many apple products but just thought of trying something new (motivated by my positive experience with Windows 7 phones).

Price: 14k or less is absolutely great price for a product of such build quality.

Camera: Works as expected from a 5mp (and 3mp) camera but remember there is no flash.

Speakers: Very good for a tablet, loud enough.

Touchscreen: Excellent resolution, at par with apple stuff. Great for pictures and videos. Pretty good touch sensitivity, though not at par with apple stuff but its pretty good. If apple is 10/10, this would be 8/10.

OS: Great multitasking capabilities but I'm afraid thats the only pros about the OS, rest of the story is kind of disappointing but its just the software and if rumors to be believed the next OS upgrade coming in Feb 2012.

AppStore: There isn't really anything to talk about.

Final Verdict: As of today, its a great multimedia device with a unbeatable price tag. But for the business and enterprise class users, will have to wait and see what the next OS upgrade has to offer.

Meanwhile, I'm writing this review logged in on my PlayBook. :)

My thoughts on PB

I was going to buy this tablet as flipkart was giving a heavy rebate.

But then again I don't have a bb, and without bb bridge its still not worth it, doesn't even have a native email client !! leave push mail !!

BBM will NOT come to playbook even on OS 2.0 (feb release).
No 3g, either bridge with bb or use an Android phone with hotspot.

App world is miserable/costly so now RIM is counting on the forthcoming android emulator, you can be sure there will be very few apps optimized for pb and if its android apps you want u can very well go with any of the n number of droid devices.

Many android tabs support more Audio/Video format than playbook

RIM already delayed these features a number of times and only God knows if they can deliver it on feb'12.

Agreed its a very good price for such quality tablet, but given Adobe is going to discontinue mobile flash and flash being the USP for pb,not sure if there will be any benefit going with this instead of say a transformer prime/ipad2 (or the rumored ipad3)

I bought to 4 months ago, i've never used my pc again. The OS is cool, the only problem was lack of apps, well its not a problem anymore. OS 2.0 will release soon which will allow users to run android apps. And with the current offer (free curve) i recommend you to take it.

Important for First Time Buyers of Blackberry:

If you are buying a Blackberry for the first time, please be aware of the following;
1) You have to register in the blackberry website for first logging in / activation of your blackberry. It is very simple: Please go to and get yourselves registered with blackberry. You can use any of your existing e-mail account_id as login. this is the blackberry_id which you have to enter in your playbook when you first install, otherwise it won't start.
2) After switching on your playbook, keep it in tablet in battery charging mode, in a wi-fi zone, longin using your blackberry_id & password. The playbook / tablet should start downloading OS from the net. Please remeber, the tablet does not come with OS, once you first log-in it gets registered at blackberry for warranty/etc., supports, downloads the software.
3) For the present playbook, it downloaded a software of about 513 MB which takes about half an hour. After this it automatically gets re-started and gets ready for your use.
4) In case, your playbook does not download, do it in a PC seperately from blackberry site and connecting through USB, repeat the above procedure to boot/install your playbook.
Feedback: Excellent tablet with HD, 5MP/3MP camera, 16 GB, 5300 mA battery at this price range for internet. Please note, your word, excel, power point, pdf files open here a wonderful experience. Does not have a radio/call feature, still I love to rate 5 star.

Better and cheaper than ipad 2

my friend got a ipad2 two months and i 've been using playbook for 4 months now here are the differences:-
Apple:pay more get less
playb:pay less get more

AT 14k for 16gb version it's a loot
both are comparable in physical experience as such but play book has a better processor and camera

3)software & UI:
playbook is both multitasking and flash enabled therfore you will get a better browsing experience in playbook whick is not the case with ipad2.

if you are "Appoholic" then go for ipad although os 2.0 supports android apps and the blackberry may consider making it's os opensource so there is a possibility of a better app market is there in future

Excellent keyboard gesture in playbook and a very awesome spread sheet application good for the business class

but it's biased to blackberry smartphone users with blackberry bridge as there are quiet a bit feature that they could have shared with a lot of other smartphone vendor's

4)the UI of both apple and blackberry targets different domains of public so it's quiet customer specific..

5)battery is better in apple as compared to playbook

Best Tab below 20k ;)

Guys first of all,i got playbook from a developer contest and not from flipkart.

The experience on Playbook is amazing.
The os is superb(apps will later),i mean the os lagless always. The border around playbook is touch sensitive and there are many swiping techniques which are very useful when navigating through menu. Then there is the BB's superb keyboard,i am now typing from playbook it is spaced very good and feedback effect is very good.

The screen is very good, and i put 1080p videos and it's eye popping although it doesn't catch upto retina's certantly bright, but the contrast is a bit low.Overall the screen is excellent.
The apps, now let me tell.....the apps are there but not much apps that u want, those quality apps are missing.but this growing pretty fast,i am developer and i know it.Also gameloft has announced 11 game titles which are very good, also Laracroft Tombrider has also come and it's superb.
Also Blackberry os 10 is coming and the early preview on from blackberry world is very good, many developers are more interested in blackberry now.PlayBook has been confirmed to get BB OS 10.
As far apps and os is concerned i love avery single aspect of it.

The browser is very good, the speakers are very loud and it is enough to get a room full of peoples attention. The build quality is also superb it's a solid device, and the soft touch back is very comfortable.

I have been using playbook for about 2 months and the experience has been incredible.I am not a blackberry fan boy, infact i hated them with their qwerty phones, but now i am in love.I own Samsung galaxy R,HTC Explorer and i know android,it's very good. But is u want to do what u want to do the playbook is very good.

For tablet at 13k ,it's very good, and i would definitely recommend it.

Thank you

Never Buy BlackBerry Playbook

I've purchased BlackBerry Playbook considering its attractive features in affordable price. But unfortunately made a huge mistake buying this sub standard product. Issue Playbook not retaining charge.

Pathetic Service Support: No direct service center/ Call Center of BlackBerry in India. Redington, India are the authorised service partners who are least bothered about the Blackberry Customers. I've called BlackBerry US Tech Support. No Help!

FlipKart: Informed that they only sell the product and are unable to provide any assistance in this regard.

Never Buy BlackBerry Playbook.

Everything about the playbook seems to aim at the mid-priced tablet. The lack of a 10" screen and 3G highlights this. However, it provides some really cool features.

The touch response and screen quality of a device determines its usability and ultimately its standing in the market. The playbook scores very well here. The pinch to zoom works smoothly. The UI is neatly done without the need for any buttons. If you have a blackberry device, you can sync everything over bluetooth using Blackberry Bridge. However, if you do not own a blackberry phone its of no use.

The mail application is very good. It gives outlook-like feel and is designed to function smoothly. It supports Microsoft Exchange which will be very handy at work place.

The browser is decent and does the job. The problem I faced with this tablet is that it does not connect to certain WIFI hotspots which can be quite annoying at times.

The back camera is decent. The front camera can be used for video chat over skype (via in browser). there is no official skype app for the playbook. :(

The appstore has nothing much to offer. It has an Android player to run android apps. Finding ported android apps is a problem and there are only a few apps that are ported. It comes with NFS undercover which runs smoothly. It also has Adobe Reader to view pdf files. The only bug in this app is that it does not auto-align text/zoom when tilted vertically(to read like a book).

If you are into using this thing for every tiny thing and depend on apps, this device is not for you!

To read ebooks, browse the net over wifi, check mails, play a few games, watch HD videos while listening to music this is definitely worth it and I would perfer this over the Micromax/Vox/Olive tablets.
