‘The Umbrella was like a flower, a great blue flower that had sprung up on the dry brown hillside.’
In exchange for her lucky leopard’s claw pendant, Binya acquires a beautiful blue umbrella that makes her the envy of everyone in her village, especially Ram Bharosa, the shop-keeper. Ruskin Bond’s short and humorous novella, set in the picturesque hills of Garhwal, perfectly captures life in a village, where both heroism and redemption can be found.

Childhood is the most beautiful time period of a person's life. We all want something badly when we are kids. But pure innocence is in the mentality of giving.
Binya is just another child, who, one fine day comes across a beautiful Blue Umbrella. She also possesses a beautiful Locket. She sacrifices one dear possession for acquiring another. The Umbrella becomes her best friend.
Wherever she goes, the umbrella goes with her. Her cattle and her brother accompany the two. The relation between Binya and the umbrella is a sort of ‘Heart to Heart’ relationship. Though the two can’t talk to each other, Binya knows what the umbrella can do for her, and the umbrella seems to know, when Binya will need it and for what.
But it doesn't end here. There is Ram Bharosa, a local shopkeeper, who wants the umbrella. He tries every possible way to gain the umbrella. Victory, or Defeat - it is afterall Binya's innocence that solves the conflict of the two.
Perfect setting, good characterization, great narration - 'The Blue Umbrella' is a book for every child, every adolescent and every elder to read. Though it is a children’s story, it gives a message to every individual. It is a must for every age group and every individual.
This book is simply amazing in it's simplicity and flow. This book is a marvelous read and children and adults alike.
It is heart touching story. Simple, short, but really nice.
This book is very good for even kids of age group 8 yrs ahead.
This story is about the village girl who got the blue umbrella from lady from town. Later some old village person become greedy for this umbrella. We all in our life become greedy on some or another moment of life.
The story demonstrate very effectively the meaning of relations, forgiveness and the pleasure that you get out of it.
Author has succeeded to deliver this message with very nice story.
This book is meant for the kids but that does not mean that adults can't enjoy the simple yet fluid flow of the story. The book is set in large type and has superb b/w illustrations to engage the child.
Apart from the excellent story and superb narration this one also has the added advantage of a subtle moral lesson - selflessness over greed.
I finished it off in half an hour and what a splendid half hour it was. Looking forward to reading this with my nieces.
I'd highly recommend it.
THE RUSKIN BONDSwith mundane happenings in small towns that take on a curious charm when described in his graceful prose. Usually his books do not shake heaven and earth. Likewise, the events of this books are not of garangutan proportions either. And that is the whole point of it. We are made to pause in our tracks and take time off our reckless lifestyle to think about an alternate world, a place that is so slow paced that you can feel the seasons go by.
