If Alexander the Great wept at the age of 33 because there were no more worlds left to conquer, Bobby Jones beat him by five years. In a nine-year period before he retired from the game at the age of 28, he won or finished second in the U.S. Open eight times, won the British Open three times, the U.S. Amateur five times, and the British Amateur once, amassing a total of 13 major championships. He stood at the absolute pinnacle of the game and was one of the most recognized celebrities in the world.
These accomplishments may have been enough for ordinary mortals, but Bobby was just getting started. He went on to found The Masters Tournament, have a distinguished military career in World War II, and become a successful businessman and attorney. When those who knew him best remember him, they speak not of his accomplishments, but of his character, his unassuming manner, and his genuine concern and compassion for friends and strangers alike.
