The Body in the Library (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.199

The Body In The Library is a Jane Marple mystery. It is about a beautiful blonde woman, whose body is discovered in front of the hearth at Gossington Hall, the library of Colonel Bantry.

Summary Of The Book

Miss Marple, a friend of Mrs. Bantry, has her suspicions about the murder of the blonde woman. She suspects that the murderer could be anybody from the colonel’s neighbour to the relatives of a wealthy widower. The blonde, whose body is found at Gossington Hall, is not only beautiful, but also appears quite poised, glamorous and sophisticated, even in death. It is evident that she has been strangled to death after being heavily drugged. However, there is nobody to claim the body, or even recognize her. Also, it is established that she was a virgin at the time of her death.

As the investigation progresses, it is discovered that the blonde woman had been about to inherit a huge lineage just before her death, and this is when the investigation take a sharp turn. The main suspects in The Body In The Library are Basil, a neighbour of Colonel Bantry, who has been known to date a woman with similar features to that of the victim, Mark and Adelaide, the son-in-law and daughter-in-law of Mr. Conway, a widower.

Miss Marple sets out to find the killer and tells Mrs. Bantry that her neighbour, Basil Blake, who is also the son of Mrs. Bantry’s school friend, could possibly be behind the murder. It is open knowledge that the colonel always disliked Basil. Later, the body is recognized by a cousin and colleague of the victim as that of a bar dancer, who was about to be adopted by one Mr. Conway. Mr. Conway, infatuated by the victim, had decided to disown his son-in-law, Mark, and daughter-in-law, Adelaide, and leave a huge fortune to the victim. Proceeding with her suspicions, Miss Marple discovers a startling truth in the climax, but has no evidence to prove the same.

Miss Marple’s trademark style of investigation makes full use of her experience and intelligence, her innate understanding of human nature and the ability to follow clues in a very intelligent way.
