Bong Mom's Cookbook (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.200

Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen is a recipe book, and is the spicy story of a Bengali mother who even though living abroad, tries to root her family in Bengali traditions via food.

Summary Of The Book

Indian cookery, be it South Indian, North Indian, Gujarati, or Bengali, is an elaborate affair as it uses lots of pre-processing works, plenty of ingredients, and of course, spices typical to the respective regions. Hence, an entire book could be written on any one of these cuisines. This is exactly what Sandeepa Mukherjee Datta has done in penning the book Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen.

Datta is a foodie, a blogger, and a mother, and she says that her purpose in writing this book was to maintain the slow paced Bengali cookery traditions, even in the modern quick lifestyle. Her idea was to introduce readers to the Bengali style of cooking, and the Bengali tradition and lifestyle as a whole, rather than to impart cookery knowledge.

Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen is anything but a regular recipe book. Instead, it takes readers on a journey from Calcutta where Datta’s grandmother presided in the home kitchens, to New York where Datta herself tries out typical Bong dishes. Rather than just presenting mouthwatering recipes such as posto, kosha mangsho, and paanch-phoron, in a prosaic fashion, the author has written the book with plenty of vivid descriptions, interesting anecdotes, and loads of childhood memories.

In presenting a variety of elaborate Bong recipes, Datta has not forgotten to modify them a little in order to hasten the cooking time and simplify the cooking process, both of which are necessities in today’s fast paced city lives. The book has also been presented in a very organized manner, as it begins with breakfast foods, and winds up with desserts.

Written in a simple yet heart-warming language, Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen, with its plethora of stories from a Bengali mother’s kitchen, promises to cook up a storm in every reader’s house, whether Bengali or otherwise.

Bong Mom's Cookbook- A delightful read.

The first thing that strikes you about this book is the fact that it's not just a book of recipes, for there are many in the market and some of them lie on my kitchen shelf gathering dust . The fact that this one occupies a place on my bed side table bears testimony to how different it is from other cookbooks . Each and every recipe has an origin with a story attached with many incidents and memories that take her back to how food was cooked and served, the various smells emanating from the kitchen and so much more that kept the passion of food alive in her heart even when she left her cou... Despite being a well known food blogger turned author, she does'nt claim to be a perfect cook but one who has reached where she is by going through her share of trials and errors, learning from people and making her own variations in tried and tested recipes which is a big boost to all who shirk away from cooking which just goes on to prove the fact that even experts were beginners at one point.
I've been following her blog for quite some time and now after reading her book and trying almost every recipe listed there, I have to say, this book is a must have for everyone who claims to be a foodie, Bong or not , it does'nt matter .
The reasons I rated it with four stars instead of five are because it does'nt have a recipe index which makes it a wee bit difficult to locate recipes and because I want to push her into writing a sequel :)

A blogger's book

I have been reading "Bong Mom's cookbook" the blog, for past six years. It is really good to see that the blog has finally taken shape of a book. I believe, the disciplined and dedicated approach of the author made this possible. The book, like her blog, is not merely about recipes. It is much more than that. It is the story of every Bengali mother. Rather mothers all over the world would be able to relate.
The anecdot,s, would remind you of chapters from "Jhumpa Lahiri's" books. They are so Bengali, yet so global. Sandeepa is a brilliant story teller. She can keep you e...

The anecdot,s, would remind you of chapters from "Jhumpa Lahiri's" books. They are so Bengali, yet so global. Sandeepa is a brilliant story teller. She can keep you engrossed with her nostalgic tales punched with humour. If you are a Bong, you would easily relate to the tales.
Sandeepa is not a trained cook, she cooks with her heart. Her recipes are not gourmet stuff, but everyday cooking that would remind you of your mother. Comfort food for the home-sick.
I only have one complain. Wish the book had more photographs and there should have been an index of recipes. Sandeepa has promised that her next book will have more photos. So keep reading.

A perfectly entertaining treat!

It is supposed to be a cookbook. But it often makes you laugh out loud, often takes you down the memory lane - where you find the similarity with your own past, and of course it often provides you the correct know how to cook authentic, but easy to cook 'bong' or bengali food.

Sandeepa, just like her blog, says - depend on your own intuition or 'andaaz' to measure the ingredients, rather follow the perfection with measuring spoons. Yes, none of our Bong Moms ever used a measuring spoon to put salt or sugar to create a delicious or comfort food for us. Sandeepa sets you free to put the 'pho...

Yes, none of our Bong Moms ever used a measuring spoon to put salt or sugar to create a delicious or comfort food for us. Sandeepa sets you free to put the 'phoron' of your choice - the way her mom, your mom or my mom did. But if you want to cook Bengali food at home, you can depend on her book completely, she will not only guide you, but also sit beside you as a friend - when you go through this book.

If you don't plan to cook anything, then also read this book - as a perfect entertainment.

The only thing I missed - the author is a great food photographer - this is known to everyone who read her blog. But this book does not represent her passion photography - miss the pictures. May be next time!

A must read if you love stories and cooking

Bongmom's cookbook is not like your usual cookbook which you will pick up only when you would want to look up for a particular recipe. Its a book which you can keep reading and not get bored. Its like one of those novels which you can turn to when you long to read one and each time its as exciting as it was the first time you read it. Sandeepa and her short stories from her native land not only share some adventurous insights into hers and her families life but also reminds us of our roots and how at the mention of every street, landscape or food even will take you back on a journey of your... Sandeepa and her short stories from her native land not only share some adventurous insights into hers and her families life but also reminds us of our roots and how at the mention of every street, landscape or food even will take you back on a journey of your own memories. You will not only love the recipes but will treasure this lovely piece of writing for an entire lifetime. Only downside it gets over too fast. This is a kind of book (mind you I am referring to it as a book because for me this is not just a regular cookbook) you would never get tired of reading nor tryin out each and every recipe given within...goodluck sandeepa for many such endeavours..I am giving 4 stars since the only thing lacking is a table of contents with page nos whoch sometimes comes in handy when you want to look for that particular recipe which you want to cook and not go through the entire book. But I forgive her since its her first and connecting to your readers at your very first attempt is almost impossible which she has done remarkably.

Awesome book..with a little disadvantage!

I have been visiting Sandeepa's blog for about 6 years now and her blog gives me that feeling when I'm in the kitchen with my mom and granny, back home. The way she describes each recipe with a brief story makes me nostalgic and reminds me of my Bong connection. I love the way she writes this book. For Bongs, it's not much of a problem as the contents reveal what recipes are included in a particular section..but for non-Bongs, this might be a big prob. Even I feel I should write the recipe list at the back with page numbers for quick reference. At first touch, the cover paper quality seems... ()

But, it doesn't matter. I love the smell of the pages and the book (full of Bong dishes) itself makes me drool! This will definitely take an honorable position in my list of cookbooks. Even if I don't try out everything, I'll know it for always reminding me of home. Thank you Sandeepa for the wonderful work!

I am a bad cook ... I forget ingredients and have no idea of the combination of spices. I bought this book for getting a basic idea for cooking.. I reviewed the blog and then bought it. All the recipes in the blog are not in the book, may be because the blog gets updated frequently. No pictures.... (View complete review)

loved it!

An enjoyable read all the way! Recipes are very easy to follow and full with the little stories behind each item. We felt a bonding with the writer and her family, as it rises beyond an ordinary recipe book. (View complete review)

Not the best cookbook I've come across

The way the book has been written is really entertaining. The recipes are mostly easy to make but the ones I've tried didn't really turn out great. More than a cookbook it is better to read this book as a diary written by a Bong mom.

There aren't many recipes in the book and there are more of th...
