Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen is a recipe book, and is the spicy story of a Bengali mother who even though living abroad, tries to root her family in Bengali traditions via food.

    Summary Of The Book

Indian cookery, be it South Indian, North Indian, Gujarati, or Bengali, is an elaborate affair as it uses lots of pre-processing works, plenty of ingredients, and of course, spices typical to the respective regions. Hence, an entire book could be written on any one of these cuisines. This is exactly what Sandeepa Mukherjee Datta has done in penning the book Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen.

Datta is a foodie, a blogger, and a mother, and she says that her purpose in writing this book was to maintain the slow paced Bengali cookery traditions, even in the modern quick lifestyle. Her idea was to introduce readers to the Bengali style of cooking, and the Bengali tradition and lifestyle as a whole, rather than to impart cookery knowledge.

Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen is anything but a regular recipe book. Instead, it takes readers on a journey from Calcutta where Datta’s grandmother presided in the home kitchens, to New York where Datta herself tries out typical Bong dishes. Rather than just presenting mouthwatering recipes such as posto, kosha mangsho, and paanch-phoron, in a prosaic fashion, the author has written the book with plenty of vivid descriptions, interesting anecdotes, and loads of childhood memories.

In presenting a variety of elaborate Bong recipes, Datta has not forgotten to modify them a little in order to hasten the cooking time and simplify the cooking process, both of which are necessities in today’s fast paced city lives. The book has also been presented in a very organized manner, as it begins with breakfast foods, and winds up with desserts.

Written in a simple yet heart-warming language, Bong Mom’s Cookbook: Stories From A Bengali Mother’s Kitchen, with its plethora of stories from a Bengali mother’s kitchen, promises to cook up a storm in every reader’s house, whether Bengali or otherwise.

    A blogger's book

I have been reading "Bong Mom's cookbook" the blog, for past six years. It is really good to see that the blog has finally taken shape of a book. I believe, the disciplined and dedicated approach of the author made this possible. The book, like her blog, is not merely about recipes. It is much more than that. It is the story of every Bengali mother. Rather mothers all over the world would be able to relate.
The anecdot,s, would remind you of chapters from "Jhumpa Lahiri's" books. They are so ...

Not the best cookbook I've come across

The way the book has been written is really entertaining. The recipes are mostly easy to make but the ones I've tried didn't really turn out great. More than a cookbook it is better to read this book as a diary written by a Bong mom.

There aren't many recipes in the book and there are more of them on the blog. Also the lack of any pictures make it a rather boring cookbook.

Apart from the above, I really appreciate the fast delivery by the flipkart team.

    Satisfactory...

I am a bad cook ... I forget ingredients and have no idea of the combination of spices. I bought this book for getting a basic idea for cooking.. I reviewed the blog and then bought it. All the recipes in the blog are not in the book, may be because the blog gets updated frequently. No pictures. I just follow the instructions about the ingredients. Picture would help. It is a helping hand for me in the kitchen. However I have not yet been able to achieve remarkable feat using it. Some of the ...

    Not Only for the Bongs!

Sandeepa is the first and last person whose blog I had followed so ardently ever since it started. So I was thrilled to pre-book her book. I must say not only that she didnt disappoint her fans but also she has gifted the reader fraternity with a gem. Though I am not a Bengali by birth, I am a Bengali in every sense by culture (being brought up in Kolkata). This book has included some of the finest Bengali household cuisines which she has divided into West bengal/East Bengal/Others tweaked by...

    Delicious!

The first impression of the book, the cover is enough to catch your eyes. It is a simple one and I love how she carried the essence of her blog on the cover. Kudos to the cover designer who really understood the sentiment of the author and millions of readers like me. The book is divided into ten sections according to the main ingredients. But the main ingredient of the book is BongMom and her love for food and to preserve the recipes of her ma and grandma for the generations to coming. Her w...

A must read if you love stories and cooking

Bongmom's cookbook is not like your usual cookbook which you will pick up only when you would want to look up for a particular recipe. Its a book which you can keep reading and not get bored. Its like one of those novels which you can turn to when you long to read one and each time its as exciting as it was the first time you read it. Sandeepa and her short stories from her native land not only share some adventurous insights into hers and her families life but also reminds us of our roots an...

    Not simply a cookbook

This book is not simply a collection of recipes with some personal anecdotes attached to them. Its a delightful and occasionally hilarious trip down memory lane that anyone away from home can relate to and yes specifically people with their own Bong Moms and Grand moms. A definite buy for people who love food.

    Awesome book..with a little disadvantage!

I have been visiting Sandeepa's blog for about 6 years now and her blog gives me that feeling when I'm in the kitchen with my mom and granny, back home. The way she describes each recipe with a brief story makes me nostalgic and reminds me of my Bong connection. I love the way she writes this book. For Bongs, it's not much of a problem as the contents reveal what recipes are included in a particular section..but for non-Bongs, this might be a big prob. Even I feel I should write the recipe l...
