The Book of Ram is a retelling of Ramayana by the popular author Devdutt Pattanaik.
Summary Of The Book
Ramayana and Mahabharata are the two great epics of India. These two epics have shaped the thoughts and characters of the people of India for centuries. They represent the culture and heritage of India. These two epics have also been subjected to changes over the centuries - in the original as well as in regional retelling. The Book of Ram, written by Devdutt Pattanaik, assimilates all the various versions of Ramayana, not just in Indian languages, but also those told in other countries like Thailand, the Balinese version, etc. So, what emerges is an interesting kaleidoscope of views on the epic. But, the main thread of the story remains the same, which makes it still easy to follow.
Devdutt tells the story of Ram as seen through various versions. So, many readers will find interesting new variations in the story, which they have probably never heard before. For instance, in one version, Sita is represented as Ravana’s long lost daughter. The story of Sabari’s meeting with Ram has also undergone many changes through the various interpretations. In the original, she is presented as a true ascetic, as Rama enquires whether her penance and yogic practice was proceeding smoothly without interruption.
Like this, the many different interpretations of the epic representing the thoughts and ideologies of the different places and different times of these versions add new facets to the story.
The Book of Ram also presents the reader with a deeper insight into the other characters surrounding Rama. They see Vashista and his teaching elaborated in the chapter on Rama and Vashista, and the story of Vishwamitra in the chapter that talks about him and Rama. Likewise, other characters like Lakshmana and Dasaratha are also introduced to the reader. The Book of Ram thus presents the whole story of Rama, the people who shaped him, and the circumstances that made him.
The Book of Ram brings out the different hues of Ramayana, the story as retold through the ages in different parts of the country and in other places in the world. It takes in not just the major versions of the epic, but also those told in folklore and folk drama versions. Thus, this book can be considered as a wide, panoramic vision of the Ramayana.

The service: This was my first order from the site although i knew it previously. I got the book right on the next day of order! The service is really good and cheers to flipkart for that.
The book: The book is a study of the legend and king Ram, his legacy and his relevance in modern times. Devdutt does a wonderful job of piecing together anecdotes from various sources on Ram and why he is so revered. I'd recommend the book to anyone who would like to know how Ram was as a person.
Some background on Ramayana might be necessary. Thumbs up to Devdutt for his passion, which is unmistakably evident in the book and his writing.
Thanks for flipkart for the good discounts and sending the book quickly.
About the book - I feel all of the Devdutt Pattnaik books are a bit costly. This book should be around 130 to 150/-
Devdutt has done a good attempt in explaining situations in Ramayan according to his logic. But as we all know everyone has different logic & different thought process. From adhyatm point of view one can give different explanation. His explanation is mainly related to society , civilization.
overall it is a good read and can start ur thought process on Ramayan.
The Book Is very Small in size to even contain the entire Ramayan But Devudutt Has Managed to Pull up and present the facts incoprated with the episodes of Ram's Life and invoke the intelectual side of our brain..
The beginning of the the covers entire Ramayana in one go...But then there are episodes throughout the book Along with many unknown Charecters that captivates our mind...
There were many questions about the behaviour of ram with Sita which has always intrigued me..This being the sole reason for me to buy this book..All these questions has been answered by Mr Patnaik..
The Last Pages of the Book has to be read by us again and again and has to be stored in our mind so that we know the real purpose of Ram when we read, hear or view about LORD RAM
This is really a good book. Gives food for thought for new generation people. There are lot of insides in the book and different angles to look at the mythological characters. What I liked was the way Devdutt has applied the modern era thoughts to the stories that have been quoted. Since we are living in Kaliyug we would rarely find any RAM in today's world.
Loved reading this book. It wonderfully narrates the Ramayana with a fresh new perspective, Ram has been elaborated as a son, a brother, a husband and as a king of Ayodha. Devdutt Pattanaik's style of writing is wonderful. The book of Ram is definitely a must read.
