In Focus - Ten Must Reads for this August

The University of Allahabad is the fourth oldest university in India, an institution that has produced innumerable political figures, jurists, bureaucrats, writers and men of letters. Its history resounds with famous names, and its inspiring and entertaining campus lore has been passed down for decades. The story of the university has been enriched by the many constituent stories of the personalities therein, European and Indian. It counts, amongst its luminaries, Motilal Nehru, Madan Mohan Malaviya, Dr Meghnad Saha, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Dharamvir Bharti and many more. Not to forget vice chancellors like Sir Sunder Lal, Ganganatha Jha and Amarnatha Jha, who were legends in themselves.
In this book, Neelum Saran Gour fondly recalls the many stories and anecdotes associated with the University to put together a comprehensive history of this iconic institution. Starting from the inception of the college at what was then Lowther Castle to its present day status, she traces its long journey of almost 128 years, analyzing the history of the University against the backdrop of the emergence of the Indian nation. Along the way she also reflects on some of the unforgettable personalities that peopled the campus. A centre of high learning, a political hub during the national movement and a celebrated literary nucleus, the story of Allahabad University is one that deserves to be told and more importantly, read by all.

Wind /Pinball includes Haruki Murakamis first two novels, published back-to-back, available for the first time in English outside Japan. With a new introduction by the author.

Published as a reversible hardback

If youre the sort of guy who raids the refrigerators of silent kitchens at three oclock in the morning, you can only write accordingly.

Thats who I am.

Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973 are Haruki Murakamis earliest novels. They follow the fortunes of the narrator and his friend, known only by his nickname, the Rat. In Hear the Wind Sing the narrator is home from college. He spends his time drinking beer and smoking in Js Bar with the Rat, listening to the radio, thinking about writing and the women he has slept with, and pursuing a relationship with a girl with nine fingers.

Three years later, in Pinball, 1973, he has moved to Tokyo to work as a translator and live with indistinguishable twin girls, but the Rat has remained behind. The narrator finds himself haunted by memories of a past relationship but also by his short-lived obsession with playing pinball in Js Bar. This sends him on a quest to find the exact model of pinball machine he used to enjoy so much.

Good morning, its 6 a.m. and I am wide awake because the man of the house has decided that he needs to perform a series of complex manoeuvres that involve him balancing on his left elbow. When I fell asleep last night, there was a baby lying next to me. Her smelly diaper is still wedged on my head but aside from this rather damp clue, I can't seem to find her anywhere. I could ask my mother-in-law if she has seen the baby, but she may just tell me that I need to fast on alternate Mondays and God will deliver the baby back to me . . Full of wit and delicious observations, Mrs Funnybones captures the life of the modern Indian womana woman who organizes dinner each evening, even as she goes to work all day, who runs her own life but has to listen to her Mummyji, who worries about her weight and the state of the country. Even before Indian writing in English became the fashionable thing it is today, Nayantara Sahgal was a name to reckon with internationally. In Day of Reckoning - Stories, her first collection of short stories, one finds a familiar engagement with society, human rights and politics and a Sahgalesque subversive take on tradition.
A foreign journalist tries to make sense of a rapidly changing India even as a leading political leader is assassinated in public, a Naxalite who believes in scientific killing of the class enemy and the cult of violence is shattered when it boomerangs on him, a favourite aunt assigned the task of getting her young nephew back to India from London for an arranged marriage finds more than she had bargained for.
This is a thought-provoking, yet disturbing collection of stories from a master storyteller. Brimming with rare insights on the human condition and informed by the changing political and cultural ambience of the nation, Day of Reckoning is a must-have addition to every library.

Three young men from very different backgrounds come together in a journey from India to England, where they hope to begin something new. To support their families, where they can, to build their future, to show their worth, to escape the past. They have almost no idea of what awaits them. In a dilapidated shared house in Sheffield, Tarlochan, a former rickshaw driver, will say nothing about his life in Bihar. Avtar has a secret that binds him to the unpredictable Randeep. Randeep, in turn, has a visa-wife in a flat on the other side of town, whose cupboards are full of her husbands clothes, in case the immigration men surprise her with a visit. She is Narinder and her story is the most surprising of them all. Utterly absorbing and beautiful in its scope, The Year of the Runaways is written with compassion and touched by grace. As Tochi, Avtar, Randeep and Narinder negotiate their dreams, desires and shocking realities, as their histories continue to pull at them, as the seasons pass, what emerges is a novel of overwhelming humanity: one which asks how far we can decide our own course in life and what we should do for love, for faith and for family.

The Gita : For Children (English)

It's one of the oldest books in the world and India's biggest blockbuster bestseller! But isn't it meant only for religious old people? But isn't it very long and super difficult to read? But isn't the stuff it talks about way too complex for regular folks to understand? Prepare to be surprised. Roopa Pai's spirited, one-of-a-kind retelling of the epic conversation between Pandava prince Arjuna and his mentor and friend Krishna busts these and other such myths about the Bhagavad Gita. Lucid, thought-provoking and brimming with fun trivia, this book will stay with you long after you have turned the last page. Why havent you read it yet?

Indian Kitchen by Maunika Gowardhan
I am not much of a fan of cooking books. I guess I am unable to appreciate what goes into a cook book. However, I was most excited about Indian Kitchen. Maunika Gowardhan is a food writer and private chef living in the UK. This book is all about comfortable meals and divided into sections which are so relevant to both – eating and cooking: Hungry, Lazy, Feasting, Indulgent and Celebratory. The book is a visual delight as well. It will most certainly make you want to cook those recipes and taste them. “Indian Kitchen” is a cookbook for all people who are beginning to cook.

Sourav Ganguly: Cricket, Captaincy and Controversy by Saptarshi Sarkar, Reviewed by Arun Raghavan
Before this book was launched I was of the opinion that I knew each and every stat of Sourav Ganguly and I knew every record of his. I was made to look like a fool after I got hold of this book. What a fitting tribute to the Legend. To be honest I wasn't expecting anything other than a general perspective of Ganguly's Career but to my surprise not only does it give you a summary of his career but it gives you strong reasons with statistics and with comparisons to prove a point. All cricket fans believe that Ganguly is an ODI great and an average in Tests. You will be proved wrong about Dada being an average in TESTS once you start reading this book. It has 18 chapters and every chapter covers one particular aspect of Sourav's Journey. The 2nd Chapter gives you a detailed story about Sourav -The ODI Great. The 7th chapter is titled Lord of the left handers and it gives us an idea of where Sourav Stands among all greats in world cricket with some amazing facts and figures presented in a completely different manner. The Sixth chapter deals with Sourav the captain and many more. I don't want to go in-depth in detail because I don’t want to spoil the excitement of reading it yourself. Your respect for Sourav will grow even stronger once you read this book. Kudos to Saptarshi for compiling so much of Data and Statistics together to bring up this wonderful book on Dada. By the looks of it, would have taken him years to complete this gem. I would recommend this to all die hard Sourav Ganguly fans as well as ardent cricket lovers.
