This book traces the history of modern India starting from 1857, and details events up to 1947. It discusses the freedom movement and the various parallel movements on the social, economic, and political arenas too. The book also profiles various prominent leaders and personalities involved in the various reform and freedom movements and the leaders of independent India.
The first chapter takes a look at the Revolt of 1857. Then, the book discusses the various religious and reform movements that began in the nineteenth century. It then moves on to the beginnings of the nationwide freedom movement.
The next three chapters trace the national movement in three stages. The first covers the period between 1905 to 1918. The second covers the era of mass nationalism between 1919 to 1939. The third section covers the period from 1939 to 1947. It covers the gradual progress towards freedom and the Partition.
After this, the book focuses on the changes that took place in various fronts during the period of the British rule, and until independence. It discusses the administrative changes since 1857, the civil rebellion and tribal movements from 1757 to 1947, the peasant movement, and the workers movement.
A Brief History of Modern India also discusses the economic impact of the British rule on the country, provides notes on certain aspects of the British rule, covers the educational development, the evolution of the Indian Press, and the rise of the Indian State. The book also discusses the evolution of India’s foreign policy.
It contains a reference section that has profiles of personalities associated with the freedom struggle and the various reform movements. It takes a look at the various tribal movements including the North-East Frontier tribal movement.
The next section contains an overview of the Indian National Congress Annual Sessions, constitutional development, and famous trials during the freedom struggle. This section also takes a look at various newspapers and journals that were published during this period and has a chapter on the Governor generals and the Viceroys of India.
The book provides a concise coverage of the country’s history as it progressed gradually towards its emergence as an independent nation. It can be especially useful to candidates who are appearing for the civil services exams.

Spectrum book on modern india should be used as a reference to Bipin Chandra Pal book where ever one finds a topic or sub topic difficult to understan as topics in this are straight and have extra referencer from Internet (copy, paste). It should be better to make notes from Bipin Chandra book for Civils (this book should be read along while making notes from Bipin) however, one may copy a little few points from this but convert them in to ones own language
Finally a reference to others
Not up to the level of Civils.
well, it is a very compact in size as well as compact in briefing history of modern India. very good book, helps in revision for exam point of view. It clearly explains the period of 1857 to 1947.
But the only problem is that it has very small letter font size
This book is an extremely useful tool for civil service exam aspirants. It gives concise and very useful information in a lucid and easy to remember language. A good buy.It gives an overview of the modern history in a nutshell.
Well they say that good things often come in smaller sizes, this book is an example of that notion. Nice for any time reading.
The printing is okay but the Font Size could have been bigger, the font size is small.
