A Brief History of Time from the Big Bang to Black Holes (English) (Paperback) Price: Rs.228

Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time takes its readers on a historical odyssey, presenting the various theories developed by different cultures over many millennia to explain the origin of the Universe.

Hawking goes on to explain the actual physics of the Universe. The first half of the book explains complex concepts like quantum physics, the fabric of space-time, particle physics, gravity and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

In the book, Hawking explains how Einstein changed the way we view the universe by introducing time as the fourth dimension to the traditional three dimensional setting of the universe. Next, the subject of Quantum Mechanics, which deals with matter at the atomic and subatomic levels, is explored.

In the second half of the book, Stephen Hawking deals with the subjects that are connected to his own research areas like Black Holes and Hawking Radiation.

The books starts off by presenting an interesting story about an elderly woman who challenges the views presented by an astrophysicist and claims that the earth is flat and is supported on the back of a tortoise. This sets a reader friendly tone that’s followed throughout the course of the book!

After he was warned by an editor that for each equation in his book, his readership would decrease by almost 50 percent, Hawking relented and kept the equations to a minimum of one – just E=mc2.

A Brief History Of Time From The Big Bang To Black Holes has become a bestseller in its category. The first edition was brought out in 1988 by Bantam Dell Publishing Group. Since then, the book has sold over 10 million copies. It stayed on the bestseller list of The Sunday Times for over four years.

About the Author
A recipient of the highest civilian award in the United States, Hawking is a renowned cosmologist and theoretical physicist. He is popular in the academic world and has a high regard in his field of practice.

Stephen Hawking has written and co-authored other books. Some of them are:

  • The Grand Design
  • A Briefer History of Time
  • The Universe in a Nutshell

Hawking is a physicist with a precise and mathematical view of the world. But, in A Brief History Of Time From The Big Bang To Black Holes, he manages to explain complex concepts in a way that even a person with no scientific background can understand them. After the success of his first book, he went on to write and co-author many others.

Hawking was born in Oxford on January 8, 1942. In his early twenties, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor neurone disease. He gradually became completely paralyzed and even lost his ability to speak.

Despite his disability, Hawking went on to become a brilliant research scientist. He uses a speech synthesizer to communicate with others and to give lectures.

Universe in the palm of your hand

William Blake, in his "Auguries of Innocence" wrote

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

This maybe considered as nothing more than a very good imagery built by words. But this book helps you to hold 'infinity in the palm of your hand' and 'eternity in an hour'.

It is suggested that you have a 'basic understanding' of Science (Particularly, Physics) if you intend to take this book seriously (You will later come to know that this 'understanding' you had of Physics was very small indeed)...

It is suggested that you have a 'basic understanding' of Science (Particularly, Physics) if you intend to take this book seriously (You will later come to know that this 'understanding' you had of Physics was very small indeed).

Stephen Hawking, an unseemly man for a Scientist, and an ALS patient (Who was, at one time, given only 2 more years to live), walks us through the corridors of physical science and astronomy with such ease and talent. He may very well be the Einstein or Newton of our time (It's interesting that Hawking's lifetime achievement, The discovery of 'The Big Bang', defied Einstein's theories themselves).

In some places, the terms and explanations do get a little complicated. So, it would be better to have a source from which you could clarify (As in, Wikipedia). Hawking himself says that he has tried to make the books as simple as possible for the readers. And he has; for this, we must be very thankful. Otherwise, it's improbable to have another Scientist of his esteem incorporate such vast ideas into such a small book.

The book even tries to define God: With Einstein saying "God does not play Dice" with his 'Theory of Relativity' (Hinting at the non-existence of God) on the one end and Modern Scientists (Including Stephen Hawking) on the other end, with their 'Theory of Uncertainty' (Hinting at the existence of God). From this, it's becomes astounding clear that Modern Science in fact supports the notion that there may be a 'God'. It just does not support idol worship, as Hawking indirectly implies.

In a whole and in short, the primary aim of the book is to communicate the fact that Science is trying to create an 'Unified Theory', a set of laws that should explain everything happening in the universe at any given point. However, because of our utterly small brilliance, Hawking has allotted a lot of pages to the explanation of basic concepts and terms of Physics and Astronomy. For those who are already familiar with these concepts, the book may seem like a drag except for the final chapters.

Lastly, I would like to quote the Sunday Times' review from the cover: "The book marries a child's wonder to a genius' intellect". And how true that is!

The Simplest Science book

First of all I thank Stephen Hawkings for writing this wonderful book. I have never seen a science book as simple as this. Its truely great. He has explained nearly everything except the theory of everything which he has left to us, the younger generations to uncover it. This book really tempts me to take a career of science. I cant express how easy it is. From Ptolemy to Himself, he has explained the evolution of science step by step.
The book is such a fine piece that everyone should buy.

There are really many mysteries in science. We can help mankind by solving them. But for that we must have an interest and know the very basics of science. Thats why I request you all to read this book.
I am sure it will be of great help to your confused minds.

A Brief Review

A Brief History of Time- Man, no single word but "amazing" comes to my mind. This book is not just superb, it is a masterpiece. I think it is like a wonderful combination of Principia's knowledge and "A Tale of Two cities"'s beauty. The author himself is gifted with Newton's intelligence, Da Vinci's artistic temperament (whatever it may mean) and Dickens' art of writing.

This book takes us to a voyage, not around the world, but a voyage through the cosmos! It explains the most commonly asked and often unanswered questions that develop in any inquisitive person's mind,...

This book takes us to a voyage, not around the world, but a voyage through the cosmos! It explains the most commonly asked and often unanswered questions that develop in any inquisitive person's mind, with very simple words.

And the most important fact is- no single physics equation, except E=mc^2, has been included. So it is more like a Sci-Fi fantasy comic rather than a rigid Physics book.

THUMBS UP!

Brief History indeed !

An elaborate, in-depth and gripping analysis of the science of our being and how the mortal understanding of the cosmos has developed over centuries. I was extremely fascinated with some of the outlines laid by Hawking and how he scientifically does that with a mentionable count of the word 'God'... (View complete review)
