Business Sutra : A Very Indian Approach to Management (English) (Hardcover) Price: Rs.443

Business Sutra: A Very Indian Approach To Management presents an Indian way of doing business. It reaches into Indian mythology and history to find management sutras that are extremely suitable in contemporary times.

Summary Of The Book

Business Sutra: A Very Indian Approach To Management, published in 2013, introduces readers to the Indian way of management, which is very different from the commonly followed Western methods.

Modern management, which is taught in business schools all across the globe, is rigidly goal-oriented, and lays extreme importance on increasing shareholder value. Ancient India was famous for its trade and commerce, thus management has long been a part and parcel of this country’s tradition. The author has used stories, rituals, and symbols from Indian mythology to provide a more subjective way of approaching management. Business Sutra: A Very Indian Approach To Management emphasizes on the significance of darshan, which is essential in the relationship that individuals share with Goddess Lakshmi.

Pattanaik illustrates how to run a tea stall, as well as a multinational company, by using the sutras mentioned in this book. Readers will see that Western management encourages people to chase wealth, whereas Indian management says that wealth should be attracted. The first creates a battleground-like atmosphere, whereas the latter feels more like a playground.

Business Sutra: A Very Indian Approach To Management starts off with an introduction, which explains how business and belief are interlinked. The second portion elucidates on Western, Indian, and Chinese schools of management. The final part constitutes about 77 per cent of the total book. It has 145 sutras, and each one of them is explained in detail. To help readers understand better, each one is accompanied by a story from Hindu mythology. Furthermore, caricatures and diagrams have been added to ensure that the meaning of each sutra is absolutely clear.

Business Sutra: A Very Indian Approach To Management is original, radical, and brilliantly argued.

Very interesting 3B framework

I received this book yesterday and was riveted right away - I am a keen follower of HBR and was very keen to read this as soon as I read the review in The Hindu. I pre-ordered this book and it was promptly delivered with tracking updates sent to my mobile in a timely fashion - Thanks Flipkart.

Now on to the book itself - I think Devdutt has captured the essence of his arguments / beliefs very well - He builds credibility about himself, right upfront. Then drives home the point of WHY we need an alternate theory to the heavily HBR influenced business methods of the west. He then goes on to...

In toto - a well articulated viewpoint. I was particularly impressed by the way he uses visuals to drive home a specific point. This aids better assimilation / retention of his viewpoint.

One Con (For lack of better words) is the heavy use of hindu / Jain mythology reference jargon - This MIGHT be a challenge if you are not used to these religions - might seem like an overdose of info - But will be a good starting point to understand your team / organization / community.

Good book but a little biased opinions at places

This book is definitely a good read.

But certain disclaimers to the readers.
1. Unless you like a little bit of mythology and are inclined towards spirituality this may not be the right book for you
2. This is one book which needs a little knowledge of Hindu gods otherwise it may be a bouncer at many places

Overall a good read and keeps you interested across the pages. At some points I found the author's views biased but that is a personal perspective.

Take it in a little light and refreshing point of view as a book which is different from what typical business books or management book...

An easy yet profound read!

Well researched - Devdutt superbly draws allegories between stories and themes in Indian mythology with common dilemmas facing the Indian manager. Often it is easy to identify ourselves & our dilemmas with the characters & events in Indian mythology- simply because this reflects the very essence of our culture and who we are. Hence it is easy to look at these allegories and find an instant connection to our own dilemmas & situations in the corporate world. If you an Indian manager - it is a must read! How Indian Business can evolve its own way of doing business?

Highly unsustainable C A D for the three years in running; Indian consumers enrich foreign brands; management education texts still predominantly for Western World- is what we keep listening to and accept as a way of life.
Here is a thought-provoking treatise on provides a very fresh view to our own way of doing business, from the modern, contemporary western management principles.
Devdutt Pattanaik's new book espouses management principles, explains them form the lens of Indian Mythology and supports the analyses with small case studies.

Pioneering Work

Devdutt Pattanaik has drawn management lessons from mythological stories of India. The book is brilliant and inspiring. It does get difficult at places though.

If you can survive and enjoy the first few chapters, then the remaining 75% of the book (where the Business Sutra) starts is a quick read. The initial part is where he introduces the concepts and talks about Indian, Western & Chinese Philosophy.

The book is for slightly serious readers since some concepts do become complex. A must read for everyone who is a Hindu. You will be surprised what lessons our Puranas, Mahabharata and...

Fresh perspective on Management

This book is a wonderful attempt to see management from Indian perspective. Each chapter begins with explanation of a framework, which is then described by multiple sutras. These sutras are superbly illustrated, with examples and stories taken from Indian mythology; sometimes also including a sto... (View complete review)
