Winner of the DMA-NTPC Book Award 2013

Business Sutra - A very Indian Approach to Management is a radical, nuanced approach to management, business and leadership in a progressively polarized world.

In this landmark book, bestselling author, leadership coach and mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik shows how, despite its veneer of objectivity, modern management is rooted in Western beliefs and obsessed with accomplishing rigid objectives and increasing shareholder value. By contrast, the Indian way of doing business, as apparent in Indian mythology but no longer seen in practice accommodates subjectivity and diversity and offers an inclusive, more empathetic way of achieving success. Great value is placed on darshan, that is, on how we see the world and our relationship with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Business Sutra uses stories, symbols and rituals drawn from Hindu, Jain and Buddhist mythology to understand a wide variety of business situations that range from running a successful tea stall to nurturing talent in a large multinational corporation. At the heart of the book is a compelling premise - if we believe that wealth needs to be chased, the workplace becomes a rana-bhoomi-a battleground of investors, regulators, employers, employees, vendors, competitors and customers; if we believe that wealth needs to be attracted, the workplace becomes a ranga-bhoomi-a playground where everyone is happy.

Good book but a little biased opinions at places

This book is definitely a good read.

But certain disclaimers to the readers.
    1. Unless you like a little bit of mythology and are inclined towards spirituality this may not be the right book for you
    2. This is one book which needs a little knowledge of Hindu gods otherwise it may be a bouncer at many places

Overall a good read and keeps you interested across the pages. At some points I found the author's views biased but that is a personal perspective.

Take it in a little light and refre...

    An easy yet profound read!

Well researched - Devdutt superbly draws allegories between stories and themes in Indian mythology with common dilemmas facing the Indian manager. Often it is easy to identify ourselves & our dilemmas with the characters & events in Indian mythology- simply because this reflects the very essence of our culture and who we are. Hence it is easy to look at these allegories and find an instant connection to our own dilemmas & situations in the corporate world. If you an Indian manager - it is a m...

    Fresh perspective on Management

This book is a wonderful attempt to see management from Indian perspective. Each chapter begins with explanation of a framework, which is then described by multiple sutras. These sutras are superbly illustrated, with examples and stories taken from Indian mythology; sometimes also including a story on a current-day management issue.

The book is also good for those who would like to see Indian mythology in a different perspective.

Get Your Sutras Right With Business Sutra

"Business Sutra : A Very Indian Approach to Management" for sure will be an interesting read for someone like me who doesnt prefer "heavy" stuffs. However, knowledge and interest in Hindu mythology is one of the pre-requisites for this book as the author frames the whole of his business management sutras around this.

If you are someone who likes "mythological connections" in your life, go for this..
